IMPHAL, Feb 11: In view of the massive protest agitation witnessed across the State against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, Imphal West District Police have started deploying additional police personnel to protect houses of Ministers, MPs and MLAs located within the district in the face of any violent agitation.
Imphal West SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam issued an order on February 8 to deploy additional police personnel for protecting houses and properties of 15 VIPs including Khumbong Joypurkhul residence of Lok Sabha MP Dr Thokchom Meinya and Wahengbam Leikai residence of Rajya Sabha MP K Bhabananda.
Sources informed that additional 10 police/VDF personnel and one SI/ASI/Head Constable each would be deployed to protect the house of MPs Dr Meinya, K Bhabananda, MLA Kh Joykisan (Thangmeiband AC), Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar (Uripok AC), MLA RK Imo (Sagolband AC), Minister L Jayantakumar (Keisham-thong AC) and Speaker Y Khemchand(Singjamei AC).
Additional five police/VDF personnel and one SI/ASI/Head Constable each would be deployed to protect houses of MLA Dr Sapam Ranjan (Konthoujam AC), MLA Heikham Dingo (Sekmai AC), Sorokhaibam Rajen (Lamsang AC), AK Mirabai (Patsoi AC), Minister Karam Shyam (Langthabal AC), MLA S Subhaschandra (Naoriya Pa-khanglakpa AC), MLA O Lukhoi (Wangoi AC) and MLA Kongkham Robindro (Mayang Imphal AC).
These additional security measures have been taken up as per an instruction of DIG (Range I) and the additional police personnel for protection of life and properties of VIPs would be deployed from nearby police stations, said the sources.
On the other hand, the Imphal West SP wrote to the Deputy Commissioner of the district yesterday to instruct employees of different Government departments/offices to protect their respective offices day and night as there is strong possibility of CSOs, local clubs, student organisations and Meira Paibis resorting to violence including vandalisation and burning of Government offices/buildings in the course of the ongoing anti-CAB movement.
The SP further appealed to the DC to instruct heads of departments of various Government offices to keep Chowkidars alert and also to detail 4/5 employees round the clock in their respective offices to prevent any attempt to burn/damage Government offices/buildings with effect from today.
Saying that this initiative is compelled by shortage of manpower in Imphal West District Police, the SP conveyed that extensive patrolling is being carried out by mobile police units to cover maximum areas round the clock.
