AMSU opposes ST demand

IMPHAL, Apr 28: All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) has said that it is not right to demand ST status by Meetei/Meitei community.
In a statement, AMSU said that it was wrong on the part of British writers to categorise Meiteis as tribal.
The notion was right when Meiteis were dwelling in the hills. However, Meities never remained as tribals after they began their civilization in the valley, AMSU said.
Meiteis had more than 4000 hand written books before they were converted to Hinduism. They already had an established civilization well known to the south east Asian kingdoms well before coming of Hinduism to Manipur, the student body said.
Meiteis had its extended administration outside its locality, village and community.
No doubt Meiteis are now economically weak, however, it would be wrong to presume that Meiteis would see progress, ease hardships, get employment and have many IAS and IPS officers if they get ST status.
AMSU said that people must understand that Mary Kom has not brought laurels to the country, State and her community because of her ST status but due to her ‘struggle for excellence’.
It would be wrong if some people think that Meiteis would see progress if they have many officers, AMSU said and added that the real problem is that there are many Meiteis who look down on the poor.
Meiteis used to take the responsibility of uplifting all the communities of Manipur in the past.
As such, it is unfortunate to demand ST status for Meiteis like a weak community, AMSU said and added that there is need to deliberate whether it is right to come down to the status of ST after making known to the world that Meitei is an advanced community.
It further said that it would also be wrong to think that ILPS would automatically come after Meiteis become STs.

AMSU we don’t agree with you at this.

    • k vikram   April 29, 2016 at 1:18 pm

You (AMSU) are not thinking properly before publishing this item. My question is that have you gone through any openoin drive among our syudent community (meitei) and in general public. I think you are not. It seems that you are speaking on your own. Please don’t do like this for the glory of AMSU. Just go for an openion drive we will accept the result.

      • Birjit   August 9, 2016 at 7:33 am

This is not only for AMSU.
But it also to safeguard the dignity of fools like you.

“Come down to the status of tribal” that is so wrong and condescending.

  4. Danny   April 29, 2016 at 8:20 am

Meiteis are ruled by kings and very advance. The The krishna Ras Lila dance etc. How can we accept it

    • Ronald Meitei   May 2, 2016 at 4:53 pm

Every community had their own king in olden days, its not a surprise that Meitei or other tribal community had their own King. if somebody believe Meitei is an advance community/state, please compare with other states before opening your mouth, what is the level of advance you people have ?
How you people are proud of having Krishna Lila dance? Krishna is not a Meitei, this bloody Hinduism broke our own culture n lifestyle. Don’t be arrogant by adopting others religion. If you are Meitei, be a Meitei, behave like a Meitei, lets save Meitei !!

From this we can learn that amsu is an students org that read very less books. They never care to read what does ST stand for in indian constitution or related Acts. They concerder meitei as supreme race better than any other community. While maintain in lips as brother, how can a low group n a high group be brothers. That mean that member of Amsu give up study long time ago. All community are equal n brothers all should be ST.

Looks like AMSU has lost its mind and they are ill-advised. First AMSU must forget and empty their mindset of our past hegemony, superiority or advanced. Looks like AMSU is still living in past cherishing past glories. Plz look at the current scenario and beyond present horizon. It’s not whole AMSU, it’s the statement of 2-3 people in AMSU. Why you 2-3 guys are tarnishing the image of AMSU?

  7. Singh, SS   April 29, 2016 at 9:52 am

Please do not put up any such remark which is no one responsible for. Who are AMSU? Please clearify, who and which part of the body (AMSU) give such an odd statement.

  8. Meitei the real tribe   April 29, 2016 at 10:17 am

AMSU, how old are your students leaders? 40s or 50s years old? Are you students or contractors? What you say is right but whats written in British India records are wrong. Wah! Wah! Bhalo he! Meiteis are not your puppets. The youths of meiteis are not with you. Come out of Imphal and see the youths of hill districts who have become IAS,IPS officers all over the states of India. Are you not indian? Are you chinese? You better become a driver of a ST IAS officer in imphal. Do you think Mary kom will provide employment to the Meitei youths in government services? Think n talk. If you can’t give employment to the youths of meiteis, then you better shut your mouth. Support Meitei st. Meiteis were tribes, are tribes and will be tribes. Do you think meiteis and hill tribes are different? Don’t play divide and rule in 2016. Go to senapati, churachandpur ,ukhrul ,etc n see yourself that AMSU exists or not. You also become ST and remain brothers n sisters with other tribes of Manipur. Be united Manipur n not Meitei non tribal vs tribes. We all r the same children of one mother Manipur. why are nagas, kukis not there as students leaders of AMSU? Be not hypocrite. Be realistic. Meitei youths now don’t want to beg for some stupid contracts from CM. AMSU leaders r known for it. Meitei youths now want to get dignified government services. They need ST because meiteis were tribes before.

  9. James   April 29, 2016 at 10:18 am

You think of IAS , IPS when Meitei is loosing ground in its land. Wake up kid, dont pass immature , ignorant statement. If the present situation continues , the day is not too far , another Tripura will be written in the History. Good Luck

  10. Ronald Meitei   April 29, 2016 at 11:16 am

AMSU is trying to make a hurdle on the way to ST, please think before you said these words. I am really surprised at your statement-“Mary Kom has not brought laurels to the country, State and her community because of her ST status but due to her ‘struggle for excellence”; its just an uneducated/child’s statement. one more your statement-“It would be wrong if some people think that Meiteis would see progress if they have many officers”, so what you like after completing your student life? doing business or Thika ? please mind it if you became a responsible Officer like IAS,IPS…. you don’t need to rise such negligible slogans at our society. Due to lack of good/suitable officers still our administrations are under the hand of non-Manipuris, please check how many DC & SP are Manipuri now? At my opinion, be a responsible officer insteed of rising slogans ! Be a good listener rather than barking at street !!

  11. Machatomba   April 29, 2016 at 11:38 am

Digging the past and thinking that we are above all is not being realistic right now we need to think of becoming what we was and it can be acheive only when we are able to stand up and preserve our heritage and culture. Its better to do it ourselves rather seeking help from others to help. And that can only be acheive only when we become a part of the adminstration. The infrastructue that we have here is far behind the all India standard. In sort there are only two options rather bring the infrastucture to Manipur or compet as ST.

  12. sonali   April 29, 2016 at 12:34 pm

AMSU oppose is the right thing. Meitei are never ever belong to ST. Now with the increase of the population and being the general category they can not compete the other general category in any field like education, employment etc and lack of employment in the central government. Now they thought by becoming to ST status they will get alots of facilities what others ST status got in the central and in the state. There is a lot of back log vacancy in the state govt. where the general(meitei) try to occupy it and have it too already. Above a few of this, the meitei also want to occupy the tribal area(hill area) even today now most the the tribal area/hill area were grab by the meitei into valley. The meitei want to grab the land of the tribals by hook or crook..

    • Ronald Meitei   May 2, 2016 at 4:13 pm

“The meitei want to grab the land of the tribals by hook or crook..”…its funny statement. with ST facility we will get from Centre, not from Tribal. a few tribal people already have more than 90% of Manipur land and they still trying to occupied many places in Imphal, they have handful no of officers at Center n State Govt… n what more you people like ?? if tribal people are fear of your hill areas, please left valley for Meiteis. who say hill for tribal, valley for Meitei ??

What conspiracy behind AMSU in this position? Today’s political senerio is totally in favour of ST/SC, which have higher chances of advancing in the field of education and employment. If you students body really represent whole students who are really denied of their effort and labour then you should able to answer for those students who scored half better than those weak n less talented students but chance was given to the only lower caste group of ST/SC, secondly can economically weak meeteis progress in higher studies or research or job employment with today’s highly cost studies or to get employed? Would you still believe all meeteis are really progressing politically or socially or economically in the state or country? Would you people pay tax or fees for poor meitei students? Everyone knows there is no quota in sports n Defence job where meeteis are representing in maximum but what are the impacts of such a mare sportsman or a fauji to improve or progress in economically weak society? If you people are really representing students of the state, please share your educational qualifications as well as educational background in the form of resume to apply any government job which have quota n see your own result. Do you people really know the cost of fees for a MBBS or Engineering or higher professional research studies between general vs ST/SC? If you people don’t want meitei students not to reimburse his high fees being paid by his poor farmer parents or weaver sister while reimburse for a rich ST/SC student whose father is IAS/IPS, is totally non sense of your ideology. Please don’t disturb the ongoing genuine demand for ST to the meeteis by civil organizations in the state for a mare political advantage in the name of students body.

Members of AMSU, you please update your knowledge about SC & ST status of Indian Constitution and not British writings .
It has nothing to do with down gradation of status.
Some people in Himachal Pradesh, irrespective of community, even brahmins, are in ST fold if – the residence is above a certain height in the himalayan range.
It means because they reside in a very difficult terrain they are provided ST status even though they are crorepatis owning apple orchards belonging to BRAHMIN community.

  16. Balls_To_The_Wall   May 2, 2016 at 5:22 pm

well done AMSU, you are the champion of a student organisation in the valley Imphal.

    hatsoff to you, peace

  17. Kh Bimol   August 12, 2016 at 12:03 pm

Many many years ago, everyone was after the “General” status because it was considered “high class”; and the others as “low class”.
Now everyone wants to be “ST” because of the opportunities and benefits.
Later, people will want to be “General” again because of some other reason.
    It’s all political!

  18. Hiren Kaiyenpaaibam   August 20, 2016 at 5:29 am

AMSU is right in thinking. If ST is a small road and meeteis already have ended that road journey ; they are now on highway if,they should not /cannot go back to previous small ancient road. Understandable meeteis should understand it. And this is the logic. For upgrading economyaalternate way can be thought.

    • Hiren Kaiyenpaaibam   August 20, 2016 at 5:35 am

last line =alternate way can be thought.

All of the comments are really interesting to read having different ideas and thoughts of self rights. In my opinion, demanding ST status for the valley peoples of Manipur are not bad but encouraging activity. Because struggle for existence is a birth right for everybody and everywhere. God made mankind equally but man made differently and so the results are seen differently. The valley people are not wrong in demanding ST status so that they could have equally share from the Central and State Government and others. Everybody should not underestimate the interest of the common people but required to be unity in diversity. Good luck and wishing all the best.

  20. Somo   September 7, 2017 at 8:28 am

ST status is the only provision in Indian constitution to protect indigenous people. the term indigenous is not there in the constitution but ST is the synonym for it. If meiteis are ST the majority provisions of demands of ILPS would be automatically achieved. WHo is AMSU to speak for meeteis.

  21. Soibam Iboyaima Singh   September 16, 2017 at 9:08 am

Opinion and comment of AMSU is commendable. Meitei from the ancient times have a rich culture and tradition. We maintained our prestigious heroic and strong leadership in the community and ruled Manipur as kingdom. Our past history of Manipur is the clear example, how far we defended and protected our boundary of kingdom. Other vivid examples of our spirit and courage in present time are tremendous sport persons produced from this small state. So many gold medals have been won by our courageous boys and girls. Rest of other Indian states always feels and wonder why and how Manipuris are so talented. Taking the place of ST is stupid and nonsense act.
