Entrepreneur dissects threat to Meitei community

IMPHAL, Feb 8: Expressing apprehension that Meiteis/Meeteis may encounter devastating effects, including in its survival due to the adverse impact of globalization and Act East Policy if the community is not safeguarded under certain constitutional provisions, proprietor of Thangjam Agro Industries, Thangjam Joykumar Singh extended solidarity to the demand by Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee (STDCM) for enlisting Meitei/Meetei in the ST category.
He was speaking to newspersons at his Chingmeirong residence today in connection with the ongoing campaign for seeking opinions from experts and eminent personalities with regard to the demand. Joykumar said that the influence of globalization has already reached the State even though Act East Policy is yet to be materialized.
He observed that entry of non-locals into the State would increase day by day and they would establish their foothold by any means.
It will be hard to prevent selling of property land to the outsiders and foreigners unless certain regulations are put in place in the State under the provisions of the Indian Constitution as majority of the Meitei/Meetei people face financial crunch. Hence, it would be the best thing to demand the ST status for Meiteis/Meeteis, he asserted.
He emphasised on the need to develop a well organised work culture to prevent the rampant inflow of outsiders including businessmen and labourers into the State.
Asserting that it is hard to find skilled persons in the State, Joykumar said that the Government should give more emphasis on imparting training on skill development to the youth apart from tapping their potential in different fields.
He went on to observe that there is an apparent need to develop the education sector in the State to groom the youth.
Enrolling Meiteis/Meeteis in the ST list will go a long way in creating a conducive environment for the community in all aspects, he added.
Many STDCM members including its Coordinating Committee’s convenor M Churamani and Publicity Committee’s chairman Th Gopimohon have also attended at the today’s opinion seeking episode.
