Message effectively conveyed on Wetlands Day

IMPHAL, Feb 2: As in other parts of the world, World Wetlands Day 2014 was observed today at INA Memorial Auditorium, Moirang on the theme ‘Wetlands & Agriculture: Partners for Growth’.

The function was attended by LDA Project Director Th Ibobi, Thangjing Yageirel Marup Moirang president HC Sobha and IUCN Member (Deer Specialist) Dr Kh Shamungou as presidium members.

Social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram was the resource person of the function which was jointly organised by the Association of Science and Technology, Moirang Thangjing Yageirel Marup, Moirang Municipal Council and Loktak Development Authority (LDA).

Speaking at the gathering, Th Ibobi observed that Loktak lake is in great peril.

Observing World Wetlands Day is not enough he said, all sections of the society need to understand the underlying objective of observing the day and work accordingly to preserve Loktak Lake.

People have great responsibility to save the lake for future generations which is a home to a variety of flora and fauna and is also a source of livelihood for a large number of
people.

A booklet titled ‘Water birds of Loktak Lake’ was also released on the occasion.

HC Sobha said that the benefits provided by Loktak are immense. While enjoying these benefits, people need to work with a commitment to protect ecological balance of the lake.

Dr Kh Shamungou underscored the importance of collective efforts of the Government, civil organisations and the general public to get Loktak declared as a Ramsar Site.

Dr Dhanabir Laishram observed that Loktak is perfect site for taking up rural tourism, cultural tourism and eco-tourism.

In connection with the World Wetlands Day observance, Moirang Municipal Council staff and volunteers undertook a clean up exercise of Moirang river and surrounding areas of the INA complex.

A painting competition was also held for school children on the theme ‘Threat to Loktak Lake’ in two categories.
