Poppy destroyed

IMPHAL, Feb 8: With NAB spearheading the drive, security agencies have destroyed poppy cultivations worth around Rs 47.60 crore at different parts of the State’s hill districts.
Speaking to media persons at his office this evening, NAB SP Watham Basu said that poppy cultivations spread over 680 acres have been destroyed so far.
Calculated at the rate of 10 Kgs of opium from one acre of poppy cultivation, poppy cultivators have been denied the opportunity of harvesting 6800 Kgs of opium and their monetary value is around Rs 47.60 crore, Basu said.
The renewed drive against poppy cultivation was launched on January 11 under the instruction of the Chief Minister and supervision of the DGP.
Apart from SPs, MR/IRB/AR and NCB personnel, the drive was participated by DCs and officials of Horticulture Department, said the NAB SP.
Poppies were found cultivate in the interior areas of Churachandpur, Kamjong, Kangpokpi, Senapati, Tengnoupal and Ukhrul districts, he said and added that the drive would go on. The latest drive was carried out today at Natyang village of Kasom Khullen sub-division, Kamjong district where 80 acres of poppy plantation was destroyed.
The destroyed plantation had the potential to yield 800 Kgs of opium worth around Rs 5.60 crore.
The drive was jointly carried out by district police of Thoubal and Kamjong, MR, IRB and NCB personnel and officials of Horticulture Department, Basu added.
