Before I start filling this column, my hearty congratulations to all the successful candidates in the UPSC exams. Feelings must be awesome for those achievers and their parents as they say-it’s the most sought after coveted job of the country.
The joy of cutting the mark would be followed by several events and felicitation programmes, so many awards and accolades. Not only in their homes but everywhere they go, the above follows. May be that’s why every Tom, Dick and Harry’s parents want their offsprings to become an IAS officer.
Traditionally, if one could not make it through the PMT or AIEEE or JEE after passing 12th standard, one’s parents would expect him or her to become an IAS officer one day. If not the above three prestigious posts then you got to be a teacher or a lecturer only then one can be respected.
Well, I am not here to criticise the posts or the parents, I have very high regards to both the posts and the parents. Nevertheless, I also regard fashion designers, animators, interior designers, MBAs, actors, musicians, dancers, singers, advertisers, sportpersons, journalists and the list goes on and on.
Pursuing a career beyond medical, engineering and civil service is looked down by many (I won’t say everyone, but yes, majority in our society definitely do).
Be it in a wedding or birthday parties or just a small gathering, aunties and uncles would definitely throw a question on any youngsters present in the event. “Dear, what are you doing nowadays?”
If someone replies, “Aunty, I am pursuing medical or engineering from xyz college or have just cracked civil services.”
Their joy would see no bound. But, if another replies, “Uncle, I am a senior animator in Walt Disney or a fashion designer in Mumbai or a journalist at The Guardian.”
That uncle is sure to give you a forced smile and would quip, “Dear, why don’t you prepare for civil services or become a lecturer.” Perhaps, Walt Disney, The Guardian and the likes of hold no meaning to these uncles and aunties (with due regard to everyone).
And if one is in high school, one is sure to get advices which will overflow like pouring water to an already filled glass. “Work hard to crack the competitive exams, enrolled yourself in 2-3 coaching institutes then only you will become a successful doctor or engineer.” Yeah, it’s a common advice.
Huh! Very disappointing and disheartening, isn’t it?
No matter how many times they have watched Actor Aamir Khan starrer ‘3 Idiots’, they won’t spare you to pursue what they want, not what their wards want.
Out of thousands of 12th passed outs and lakhs of graduates/post graduates compete every year for competitive exams. And only few have of them make through it. What about the others who haven’t cracked the exams? Well, in this part of the country, they will wait for next year exam and sadly, this sitting for the next year exam is a never ending process.
Mostly due to the parents’ pressure, knowingly or unknowingly they waste their precious years of life trying and trying hard to get through it. However, if one is determined and love what he or she is doing then there is no problem at all. But if it’s otherwise, then one needs to look beyond.
Lack of counselling for both students and parents is the main reason behind sticking only to the above posts. There are thousands of courses one can do and make it big in life. In this age wherein one can make one’s hobby into profession, I don’t see any intelligence in seeking for only medical, engineering or civil services.
And talking about respect for a job, I sincerely urge to all the parents to please change their perception for other jobs and to please look beyond doctors, engineers and IAS officers. Well, I am glad that there are some parents like mine who appreciate works of their non-doctors, non-engineers, non-civil servants children too.
Wen dis result will b out for 2012 who hav appear during aug...Anyone guess
