Fashion with me

Urmila ChanamLet me tell you a secret. Women look at other women, while men also look at women! Research indicates women dress up for other women. To think about it, it holds true in my case- the reason is simple-men generally admire you if you look good irrespective of what you wear or how you do your hair but women are more crtical. And their standards or expectation out of you are relatively high. So unless a woman throws an appreciative glance over your ensemble, you aren’t quiet sure you look good!!

Enter the world of fashion with me, the kinds that don’t quite peep out of Vogue or the Cosmopolitan but that you find on the streets everyday, if you are looking. I have a penchant for style and it’s got nothing to do with Paris Fashion or the international stalwart brands. I see style in the way you do things, the way you walk across the street, in the way you hold your head, the way you tie your hair, smile and dismiss others misgivings. There is a style in being a good person and in being ‘liked’ for it. There is nothing as fashionable as a girl with clear and radiant skin, irrespective of the skin tone, with healthy, shining and luscious hair that she wears long or in a ‘bob’. Along with a well toned body, she has all it takes to make heads turn.

There are fat women who can get away with wearing ‘jeggings’ teamed with a spaghetti top and slim women who don’t! Then there are those perfectly figured women who wear seemingly perfect clothes but lack a style quotient. There are women who stand out wearing the most sombre and muted colours like actress Nandita Das, and women who pass off as elegantly in an engine-red saree like Vidya Balan in Award functions. Then there are women who have all the physical attributes of a ‘siren’ but they still don’t quiet make an impression. Style is a very complex concept, really.

I find women who wear more than one pair of earrings on their ear lobes very appealing. There is this friend of mine, Dianne, at work who is half Bengali and half Goanese- she sports three pairs of tiny diamonds on her ears and every time I look at her, it doesn’t fail to capture all of my attention! It’s so feminine! Then there are girls who wear a lot of clips on their hair, fan- shaped clips in suede and velvet sprinkled with sequins or bow- shaped clips in plastic. These are clipped onto their fringe, or the side of their head, cleverly ornamenting their hair and their face, with ease and charm. Well, I must admit I am certainly one of them. I could go out without my favourite diamond earring but not without my clip! Beautiful hands, feet and nails are another fashion statement you cannot quite disregard. Long, supple, well- moisturised hands with very long, well- manicured nails painted most artistically with beautiful shades of nail varnish speak of a sophistication that a dress alone could never. Then there are those women who steal all our attention with the way they speak to you. This is super stylish and most appealing. A soft, gentle voice, well modulated backed up with intelligence and wit, is in ‘fashion’ always.

On an impulse I set out to photograph beautiful stylish woman on the streets of Bangalore one day. I wasn’t keen on the ‘model’ types I was more interested in the ordinary women. My only concern was what would I tell them, and would I get their consent? I worried that they would check on my identity and would certainly want to know where these pictures would be published. With women, one can never be too sure, can they? But surprisingly, as I stood adjusting my camera and a beautiful girl happened to cross the street, just when I was worrying if I should speak to her first, she smiled at me broadly and waved! I took a picture- click! She was evidently not only ‘okay’ with me taking her picture, but she was happy! Women love to dress up and get photographed!

I photographed almost 13 women in 2 hours time that day. I did this for understanding woman and their style and not for publishing them, if you ask me. I loved that experience. I learnt that women really care about how they look and go to great lengths to get her ‘look’ just right. Someone photographing them or paying them a compliment comes to them as appreciation of their efforts and a reassurance that they look ‘okay’ after all. You can never remain a woman’s enemy if you tell her she is beautiful. None of these women who I photographed asked me why I am photographing them and who I was! Most of them giggled out of sheer delight, one hugged me, one even told me, “You are doing a great job!!”( I don’t remember telling her what I do for a living),only one of them volunteered to take my picture.

And know what, I forgot to ask her what she did for a living!
