On Nurturing Education Dreams of a Few Deprived Students

Sanatombi AngomchaAbe (name changed) is a brilliant student, who is currently pursuing her 12th class in science stream in one of the higher secondary schools in Imphal West. She belongs to a needy family. Her mother is a mentally unstable person because of an accident she met four–five years ago and her father is a rickshaw driver who supports his family through blood and sweat. For a struggling family who can barely afford two meals a day, proper education of their children is a Herculean task. That was exactly the case with Abe. Out of sheer poverty, she was almost on the verge of giving up her education. Perhaps it was just the right time when we were informed about her condition. We did not waste further time to reach out to Abe. Though we had to face many hardships to implement our ideas, with the much needed help of our friends from Manipur, we could finally render some help to Abe. We are sponsoring her educational requirements till she completes her 12th class and will also try to help her in whatsoever way we can in the coming future. In the meantime, we will also devise and deploy many plans on how to reach out to many Abes in the coming years.

Another bright and promising student is Bungbung (name changed). He recently passed his Xth Class with flying colours. His family condition is not that worse like Abe’s but because of some health problems of his father, his educational requirements are hardly met. We are also lending our hands to Bungbung.

We must remember that there are many Abes and Bungbungs in our society. There are many NGOs and organisations that are working for the benefit of such students but it is also equally true that most of the time, an Abe or Bungbung is always left out. Governmental or Non-Governmental, corruption pries in most of the organizations in Manipur. However, as mute spectators we are contributing our share in the construction and conservation of a corrupted society. To save ourselves from getting recruited in that league, we came up with a workable idea.

I suppose most of the readers must be curious about this ‘we’. For your kind information, we are not a functioning NGO; for that matter, we are not associated with any organisation. Let me affirm that, we do not have big fat bank accounts and most of us do not even belong to top-notch families. Well, let me finally introduce ourselves. We are just a group of like-minded friends/buddies who belong to the matriculation batch of 1999, but are now staying in different cities and countries. Let me also admit, we are heavy Facebookers. We keep in touch with one another mostly on Facebook as it is the most in demand medium (not an excuse). A few weeks ago, an idea cracked among us. The idea sounded so intriguing to each one of us so we could not resist it. Besides our busy professional schedules and personal chores, we shaped our idea of sponsoring at least a few needy students in our society for their educational requirements and finalised it a.s.a.p.

Now we have started converting the thoughts into action. Please, do no classify us as the good Samaritans, because we are not. We do not want to be appreciated for what we have done because we consider it as our obligation. We are fun-loving people who just want to share our smile with those who have lesser reasons of smiling in their lives. We don’t want to talk big on any kind of issue, we can’t even promise to chip in with solid strategies to fight the ongoing social brouhaha. However, we are in the pre-nursery stage of reconstructing a liveable society – a friendly society where smiles will be epidemic and people are not prone to flirt with melancholy. We have heard many people talking about change (most of the time stressing more on IDEOLOGICAL change), we have also come across a few people who set themselves as examples of change – I do personally know a few of them – my regards go to those individuals. As of now, we do not belong to any of these categories because for the former we are still not eligible to join their league as they are the intellectual lots whose knowledge bank makes us feel so petty (but ONLY IF they believe in some action and do implement their ideas). And for the latter we cannot be as humble and adorable like them but we would sure love to fuel our inspiration from them.

As I already revealed, we found it and we find it our obligation to reach out to many students like Abe or Bungbung who are vulnerable and prone to compromise with their dreams. We do not anticipate anything in return but that smile on her/his face and of course a worry-free education that s/he pursues. We want to ensure that we are with them to add some wings to their dreams so that they become someone responsible and independent someday and make us proud. There are infact many students in our society who need us. We are extremely sorry with our own inability to reach out to those many students this time but yes, we promise that we will try our best to reach out to as many students in the coming years.

I welcome all those who want to extend their help to the poor and needy children in our society but kindly do not make us or anyone the medium to reach out to those children. Please extend your personal help in whatever manner you can and if you wonder where you would find those children, you just have to be a little concerned and watch out here and there for them. You never know there might be many at your very Leikai?

Last but not the least, to all my buddies from 1999 batch who have extended their support for this cause, thank you tons and tons. May God bless us to initiate or be a part of many such causes in the future. Hats off to you all!

PS: If anyone from our batch is reading this column, you are not yet missed out. You can join us anytime on manipurclassxbatch99@groups.facebook.com or personally contact me for any information. We do have a gamut of spicy topics to talk on (almost every day).
