IMPHAL, Sep 21: The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East has today sentenced 22 Bangladeshi immigrants to prison for two years in addition to slapping them a fine of Rs 10,000 each.
The CJM’s order elucidated that 20 days should be under rigorous imprisonment while the remaining period of the jail term should be simple imprisonment.
In case, the convicts cannot pay the fine of Rs 10,000, their prison term should be extended by six months. The 22 convicted foreign nationals were pulled up by police from Hatta and surrounding areas on August 30.
They were produced before Court the next day and were remanded to judicial custody. The concerned IO also submitted charge-sheet of the particular FIR case on the same day.
After hearing the case today, the Court declared the 22 individuals guilty of entering India without valid documents and stated that they were punishable under Section 14-A of the Foreigners Act 1946.
The Court also appreciated the OC of Porompat police station and the IO of the particular FIR case for their active and speedy investigation followed by timely submission of charge-sheet which enabled speedy trial of the illegal immigrants.
The recent drive against illegal immigrants was launched after North East people were threatened and targeted through SMSs and hate-mails in different cities of India which resulted in mass exodus following confrontation between indigenous people and immigrants in some parts of Assam.
After Imphal East District Police succeeded in pulling up illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, 19 Myanmarese Nationals were pulled up from Lilong area of Thoubal district.
Further four Bangladeshi immigrants were picked up from Serou. Around 200 Bangladeshi nationals were intercepted at Jiribam and made to turn back.
Good, least this will serve as a deterrent to those migrant who want to enter the country illegally. however, it's about time the govt set up a separate enforcing agency exclusively to deal with illegal migrants in order to effectively check the influx.
It is better late than never.
Those 19 Myanmarese Nationals, who were pulled up from Lilong area of Thoubal district must be the relatives of COPTAM. Further interrogation on each of them must be conducted scrupulously so as to protect the indigenous people of Manipur. Well done Mr. Ibobi & your Gov.
Brothers, we have to know clearly the ethnic identities of illegal migrants from Myanmar. Those found in Meitei Pangal areas r Rohingya Arkan Bangladesh origin Muslim. The undetected hidden by the locals Kuki & Paites elites migrants are Kuki and Chin tribes. In Mizoram, the Chin are treated as foreigners even though they ethnically are almost same. Sizable Meitei in Myanmar are happy with Myanmar assimilated to Myanmar mainstream as an elite groups.
what about the nepali immigrants in kangpokpi and other areas of senapati. they are in large numbers there, they have even established gorkha groups. last time i checked, nepal is whole another country.....we don't want a gorkhaland movement in our land too like that in west bengal
Why you are so agianst to kukis tribes, do you have any problems with them personally as a reader of this forum i've been watching you poking your nose in every kukis issues from d parochial veiw it not cool dude. Used your bookish knowledge of Indian economy from Mishra&puri/ D.Sundaram in positive way, Kukis-Nagas are not immediate threat to Manipur the threat is from Mainland India 100crs population, the saying lairik heiraga leisu khangdaba, mind it Jerks.
@ Mr.Jerk/idiot, do u have any new idea other than criticizing fellow commentators. Idiot comment on the main theme of the new headline that mention about the deportation of illegal migrants. The information what I have posted may be useful for GK, it can't be found in the standard GK Books.Verify it through google or published journal and magazine. My understanding of my Manipur may be more clearer than other because I love Manipur in the context of the world contemporary view.
U r too Ignorant about ur own state, we have been here from 1800s. even after 100 yrs of settlement here if u consider us as foreigners it is very unfortunate. Yes, Illegal immigrants must be sent back irrespective of ethnicity & we will extend full support if majority meitei call us for collective effort. But branding legal settlers as foreigners would only increase chaos & distrust. People of Darjeeling r demanding Gorkhaland coz it was never a part of Bangaliland & culture, physic
We r peace loving people, our population is less than 50,000 in Manipur even after 100 years of settlement. We have never demanded anything which is illegitimate. We want legal gorhka to be treated as a manipuri & equal right as a citizen of the state. Otherwise we may have to blow with the direction of wind i.e. to support our neighbors Naga & Kuki who r demanding 4 Greater Nagalim & creation of Kukiland. Do we have any options if we are not accepted by majority as manipuri when fre
@Manipuri Gorkha. Yes I do agree with you. Gorkhas or Non-Gorkhas, those who have been migrated to Manipur before 1947 and their descendants are all part of the Manipuri nation. Nobody is asking them to leave. But those who have recently migrated to Manipur should be treated as illegal. Recent movements are not specifically targeted to a certain community.
@ Murang: Yah, I appreciate ur holistic view.
