Monday Musings

By : Maisnam Chanu Liklainu

This weird song is a phenomenal hit

Two Mizo guys mimicked the elevator scene of Gangnam style song, the guys danced in an elevator pelvis-thrusting with one guy underneath him. It was hilarious. The elevator scene, the sauna scene, the man in the yellow suit, the horse- riding scene, the outdoor yoga session are all the humorous elements in the song. Gangnam style has a very catchy beat and colourful visuals. The song is a light hearted fun which is so infectious, we don’t have to know the language to get attracted to this song. Some critics want to dismiss this song as crap, vulgar and loud. Some would call the singer Park Jae-sang buffoon but the excitement this song generates has not waned. After watching the song we can assume that Gangnam is an exciting suburb which has been resonated with an energetic and cutting–edge atmosphere. It looks like there are lots of boutiques, chic hotels and resorts. The real estate business looks booming and the chaebols expanding. There must be sophisticated consumers, the housing prices must be high, the heath care and education must be expensive. The place appears to be the frontline of Korea’s constantly evolving consumerism. It looks like the ladies are highly bleached and botoxed too.

When someone talks about K-pop we immediately think of the Big Bang, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, SHINee and Wonder Girls. There are people who cannot think beyond these bands which comprise of young and well-dressed teens. They are the hip and happening bands entertaining the world. But for a change, it’s a pleasant feeling to know that Park Jae –sang’s song is all the rage and he has seized most of the countries by his one song. His video went viral and this has catapulated him to a big league. The unconventional Park Jae-sang has surpassed all the good looking manufactured Korean idols. The guy does not have the signature style of a Korean singer or rapper as he is stocky, cheesy and funny. As Park Jae-sang would put it, his video is all about dressing classily and dancing cheesily. It’s without a doubt he has put Korea in the world music map and has done incredibly well for himself.

Choosing a trendiest place is subjective and it is a matter of personal preference. However, when a Park Jae-sang’s song is played, Yaiskul comes to my mind. If Gangnam generates interest, Yaiskul does the same too. There is a certain style quotient attached to Yaiskul.

Yaiskulites are supposed to be trendsetters, wear the newest of outfits and maintain the cool culture. There is something about Yaiskul that exudes confidence. When Yaiskulgi Pakhang hit the screen, the one particular line ‘‘Nangdi Yaiskulgi pakhang maande,’’ got me thinking. I would assume the place to be warm, historic, polished, luxurious, sophisticated, inviting and chic to be attached with all the buzz and the fuss. All I know about the place is that the music scene is good in Yaiskul. Yaiskul may not be affluent but the place is considered to be the trendiest locality in Manipur. The film Yaiskulgi Phakhang captures the essence of being a person hailing from Yaiskul and the place is synonymous with upscale fashion and lavish lifestyle associated with trendsetters. I noticed that the girls have neat hair styles, they are small and petite and well-groomed. The guys are obsessed with their hair and too concerned with their looks. The materialistic vanity seeps into the local psyche which is also true of Gangnam and it has always been the talk of the people.

One high profile Gangnam style song afficionado is the UN Secretary General. He may be criticized for his dismal failures in handling world crises. It may be Syria, Greece or the economic crisis. But at the UN, Gangnam style made Ban Ki Moon did a bailamos with Park Jae-sang. The world saw Ban Ki Moon’s humorous side which was quite refreshing. For the first time, Ban Ki Moon didn’t mind being overshadowed by Park Jae-sang. He was enormously proud of Park Jae-sang’s song Gangnam Style. He was pleasantly surprised to know that over four hundred million viewers watched and liked this video.

The latest figures show that five hundred viewers have watched this video and still counting. No wonder, Ban Ki Moon and Park Jae-sang have emerged as the two most famous Koreans in the world.

What makes the song Oppa Gangnam style a big hit? Park Jae -sang did which something the regular bands cannot do. Gangnam style is a social commentary as it parodies Gangnam in a subtle way. The song mocks the affluent suburb. The mentality of people of any nation is unique on account of its own geography, history, religion and society. Koreans rarely express their ideas openly. They tend to nod in response to other people's statements which is a polite indication that they are listening attentively. Koreans seem to possess uniform values and traits. People rarely express their different opinion. It’s not usual of Koreans to mock its leaders, policies or places. Gangnam style does that and it is a refreshing departure from the conventional K-pop songs they come up with.

Gangnam style may become passé one day but one thing is for sure we cannot get enough of Gangnam style as of now. How I wish Manipur could just do Gangnam style to settle differences between the different ethnic groups.

i wanted to kno gangnam stlye.this article give me info.

I remember mr. jack black saying that one rock concert can change the world in one of his movies. And here is one song rocking everywhere. I wish it reaches manipur too- the whole song complete with its essence and not just the dance moves. Hallyu at its best.
