Another Best title tag on State
IMPHAL, Nov 2: India Today has awarded the best perfor-ming State title in small State category on health to Manipur.
Union Minister of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Sharad Pawar handed over the award to Health and Family Welfare Minister Phungzathang Ton-sing at a glittering ceremony held in Hyatt Hotel, New Delhi yesterday.
The award ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries including Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dixit, Chief Minister of Maharastra Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Mizoram Lalthanhawla and Chief Editor and promoter of India Today Group Aroon Purie.
Despite many challenges general health status in Manipur is positive. This is amply demonstrated by good level of indicators in key areas which are all India averages like Infant Mortality Rate at 11 which is one of the lowest in the country (shared jointly with Goa) and Maternal Mortality Rate of 160.

Surprising! IMR and MMR reports could possibly be true as institutional delivery is very low. As far as other health service indicators are concerned the ground reality could be contrasting. These awards are based on paper reports and in our state we have become excellent at preparing them. NRHM has however been a lifeline of the health services in our State and we are thankful to those in the Medical fraternity who are putting in their efforts particularly in rural areas inspite of the host of inconvenience. A lot needs to improve.
