IMPHAL, Nov 13 : Maram Students’ Union undertook an outreach programme on November 1 to the historical Sadim village led by its president Pungdi P Celestine with a delegation of few intellectuals, academicians and medical doctors as resource persons to sensitise the people on the issues of education, hygiene and sanitation, developmental and environ-mental aspects at the village.
Sadim village with over 100 households is 12 Kms away from Senapati district headquarters and is situated on a hillock surrounded by beautiful landscapes.
One historical landmark of Sadim village is the Sadim Lizai (commonly called Sadim Pukhri) spread over 600 sq metres approximately.
Ancestors believed this lake symbolized peace and harmony between Marams and Meiteis. The lake got its name from a particular historic event.
One day, a Meitei prince was drawing water from the lake using a golden pot (Sanabul) but the pot accidentally fell into the lake.
After this particular incident, the lake came to be known as Lizai. ‘Li’ means pot and ‘Zai’ means lake.
At present, the lake is known for its richness in snails and fishes. Summer is the best time to visit the place which is then camouflaged in lush green scenery.
The panoramic view of Sadim Pukhri is simply captivating and a delight to behold.
The mystic lake is shaped like a human foot and together with its surrounding landscape which is simply captivating, Sadim Pukhri has all the potential of a popular tourist spot.
However, Sadim village is reeling under severe underdevelopment. One primary factory is absence of adequate Government infrastructure. Delivery of core public services such as health care, education, power and water still continue to be banes of the village.
The outreach campaign featured a medical camp where 145 patients were examined and provided free medicines. It was found that seasonal diseases like measles and cold diarrhoea were common in the village sometimes causing death of infants and children due to ignorance and misconception.
Taking serious note of the low literacy rate, Principals of Saklim Christian High School and PP Christian English School assured to provide free education in their schools to those deserving and genuine children with due recommendation from the village authority.
If the fertile soil suitable for rice cultivation and vegetable crops specially cabbage is utilised with necessary scientific inputs, Sadim can free itself from the strangle-hold of economic underdevelopment, said Pungdi P Celestine.
we should be concentrating on issues like this.
