Lamka, Nov 16: An American flight nurse who volunteered to attend a medical camp at Sielmat Christian Hospital here died on Wednesday at the Intensive Care Unit of RIMS in Imphal following a bout of cardiac arrest, barely a week after she suffered a stroke during the medical camp she came for.
Dorothea E Johnson (80), a resident of Overgaard in Arizona, had come to town at her own expenses, as a volunteer, along with the Jewish Voice Ministry International team to attend a week-long free medical camp. Days before she was to depart, she suffered a heart failure on the night of November 6, and was treated at the ICCU and ICU of RIMS ever since.
‘Despite the best efforts of Doctors at RIMS she breathed her last at about 6pm last night after she had another bout of cardiac arrest and a mild heart attack,’ said John Pudaite. Dorothea had attended similar medical camps at the same hospital here last year also at her own expenses.
She was no ordinary nurse, said John. As she worked and lived in rural areas during her hay-days, she was a flight nurse, flying with patients in small airplanes and helicopters. After a near fatal incident on a flight, she decided to get her own pilot’s license, and received the same in 1982. As a pilot, Dorothea began flying patients on her own, in Cessna and Piper aircraft. Even after her retirement, she continued to volunteer full time as a nurse at a clinic in her hometown, Overgaard. And above all she died in rural India, miles away from her home while attended a medical camp and doing what she loved most – helping the needy.
She was married to Kenneth Warren Johnson, a WW II veteran and a pastor. He had passed away in 2008. They had no biological children but adopted a son and a daughter both of whom now live in Kentucky. Dorothea is also said to be an avid motorcyclist and rode Harley Davidson bikes even in her late 70s.
Dorothea was laid to rest amidst sea of tears on Thursday at Sielmat Cemetery among the chief’s family in an area reserved for them, as one of them by the people she served till her last.
