The Buddhist way of life that we saw

Four of us from the Northeast of India decided to visit the monastery at Rajpur road and the Tibetan holistic treatment centre near the water resort in Sahastradhara. We saw people passionately chanting of “Om Mani Padme Hung”. They often chanted in unison and deeply meditated on this line by paying obeisance to the Tibetan ancestors. We were curious to explore more about the people and the places but the booklets they gave us fail to answer our queries. We saw gongs, drums, incense sticks and lighted lamps. They all seemed so pure and pristine to us. We saw portion of the monastery that underwent a bit of a paint job and lightings were installed. We loved the light effects which created an enchanting atmosphere and it seemed like a paradise to us. The images that we captured were natural, exotic and magnificent.

The road leading to Rajpur was smooth and clean. The Wang festival was going on in full swing and the Tibetan delicacies overflowed. The monastery was crowded, they held prayers and resolutions were taken, they spoke in the language we didn’t know though we joined them in the congregation. We saw butter lamps offered in the true Tibetan Buddhist style. When we enquired a senior monk told us the essence of Budhhism is the path to simplicity, inner happiness and a way to truth. We offered lamps which according to the senior monk was all about healing, overcoming negative emotions creating harmony, promoting prosperity, longevity, world peace and to avert obstacles. It all sounded truly aromatic, therapeutic and soothing.

During those days, we wondered how those Tibetans came to India, how the young monks were taught, how the nuns were kept and what went on inside the monastery. Deep inside, we wanted to watch them closely to understand them better. I always thought monks were the people who had left the shackles of society behind and they were the ones who flirted with the idea of asceticism. I used to assume that they really detested the society as a whole and wanted to know why they chose that lifestyle. But on a closer look, they looked contented leading a minimalistic lifestyle.

A large chunk of Tibetans in exile resided in Dehradun. We saw two types of Tibetans; one deeply traditional and the other highly westernised with gogs and shorts. Some of them looked filthily rich, quite flashy and flamboyant but one thing connected them, their longing for “Free Tibet”. They all longed to return to a free land. Some of the Tibetans in Dehradun seemed to be pampered and they were educated in the schools sponsored by the Hollywood celebrities. We were pleasantly surprised to meet the heavily accented young Tibetans beaming with pride saying their schools are located somewhere on the way to Dehradun and Mussoorie.

A bus took us to Sahastradhara, initially we were apprehensive to take the scary road but thankfully it was perfectly executed by the driver. The trees there looked high and mighty. Our journey took us through high mountain passes, the twisting and turning were frequent, the clear blue water of the resort and the lush green foliage were captivating. The mythical temples and the wooden structures that we saw on the way transported us to a different realm. We felt as if the beauty of sunrise and sunset were best seen on the way from Rajpur road leading to Sahastradhara. The peaks on the horizon were breathtakingly beautiful and the place looked quite blissful.

Taking a walk was one of the most rewarding experiences we had during that journey. The thrill of walking under the shadows of the mighty mountains was unforgettable. We came face to face with the fresh air as we felt the wind in our faces. Our journey to a monastery and the healing centre gave us the much needed freshness and we returned to our hostel after taking the blessings from the senior monk who tried his best to explain Tibetan Buddhism. We came back learning the importance of equanimity, meditation and silence.

Buddhism is very universal in approach..

Imran Khan

Though the goals of all the religions are the same, I find the ideology of Buddhism quite natural and true. For a study tour we went to Myanmar. And entered some famous monasteries. The aura there was quite heavenly. I felt the same as you felt che... Their teachings and living style is so adorable. Quite a memory.
