Sir,
Our state Manipur has been ailing from a number of ailments for which the government seems to find no solution in sight. A small state which otherwise should have been a role model one turns itself out to be a nightmarish one for the people particularly for the hill people. The first and foremost ailment comes in the form of lack of good political leaders and its concomitant poor governance. We strongly and urgently need political leaders who have a world outlook, and who truly feel the pulse of the people particularly the weaker section of the society. When it comes to the field of education there seems to be a “systematic deprivation” on the part of the government towards the hill people especially on the front of science stream. Call it educational euthanasia. When the world is driven by the growth and development of science and technology, we cannot afford to lag behind others if we really want to prove ourselves worthy of our existence.
The lack of regular teachers in the hills areas particularly of science teachers at the higher secondary school level proves to be a great bottleneck for young and aspiring science students and enthusiasts to take up science and make it a profession as well as a discipline of learning and knowledge. When the government of India as well as scientific institutions across the country are giving so much importance and emphasis to learning science and pursuing further research especially in the field of biology, if the state basks idly in the chair of ignorance and lethargy, our state would be a poor specimen in itself. Mind you politicians, ministers and bureaucrats alike, that the present era is the era of biology/life science where it has proved and has been proving to be an emerging and converging field of discipline of knowledge and learning-be it from mathematics, physics, chemistry, medicine, computer science and even social sciences. One wonders if those at the helm of affairs have any inkling as to what the world and its human civilisation might have been had it not been for the advancement of science and technology.
It is in this context that, I fervently urge and appeal the elected representatives of Manipur especially the hill MLAs to stand up and espouse for the cause of the student community for which cause too, they are elected. It is the dream of younger generation to see you all rise up above the tunnel- vision of power and politics and personal whims to do and deliver the needful. Much water has flown down the rivers lmphal, Barak, Makru, etc., and we, anticipate a real change, though gradual, to take place in the field of education particularly science and technology through your earnest concern and effort. Internet facility, too, needs to be established to enable the students get connected to each other and to have access to all sorts of subject matters and knowledge at their fingertips. With all these dreams and visions of ours realised within no time, we, hope for a prosperous, harmonious and cohesive society/state which shall be a glaring example for others. May God bless Manipur!
Yours faithfully,
Thaigongam Martin Dangmei
