Imphal, Nov 25 : At a time when forest authorities and animal lovers have intensified their campaign to protect and preserve wild life, a food outlet opened in the ongoing Manipur Sangai festival here has allegedly put up an array of dishes of wild animals like wild boar and porcupine on their menu.
Members of People for Animals (PFA) Thoubal, who carried out a brief survey at the festival venue on Saturday, found the stall runners selling porcupine and wild boar meat openly drawing in the crowd.
The food stall runners are selling the rare animals’ meat at Rs 100 per plate containing five to six pieces.
“This is the most ugly and shameful part of the festival. We really don’t know how the festival organizers, who are responsible officers of the State Government, granted the permission to sell these items,” said Lourembem Bishwajit, managing trustee of PFA Thoubal.
“We have procured the meat claimed by the stall runners as that of porcupine and wild boar for documentary evidences. If the matter turns serious we will send them to experts for confirmation after consulting forest authorities,” he said. Besides fixing menu of the rare animals’ meat on the stall banner and putting the species’ names on the thermo flasks, the runners also serve them to the people, he said.
“The festival being named after the rare and endangered Sangai has no meaning when other endangered animals’ dishes are sold in the open. This shows that the outlet runners and the festival organisers have no sense to protect and conserve wild animals. The foreigners who are currently joining the festival will have a bad impression of Manipuri people,” he lamented.
Wild boar and Porcupine are listed in Schedule III and IV of the endangered animals of the country under the under the Protection of Wildlife Act, 1972, he said, while appealing to the Forest Department to take immediate action against the outlet runners and the festival organizers.
Efforts to contact Manipur forest officials on the matter drew a blank for the day.
PFA Thoubal is currently on its ‘Greet our Guests’ campaign to protect the migratory birds which have landed in different wetlands of the State to take temporary shelter during the cold season.
such mindless people r busy minting money.....what they care for is money only....
I feel that serving the meat of wild boar or porcupine and other wild animal occasionally in the northeastern part of India should be considered as part of its culture. We are meat eaters so is everyone in this modern world and even those who are traditionally vegetarians are also looking for a chance to taste meat. Why do we celebrate Hon bill festival / Sangai festival etc..may be because of the meat But from where do this Wildlife Protection Act descend to the Northeast. The northeast region should be given some relaxation from the Indian Laws in view of the distinct way of life and culture. K.ZOU
I realy apriciat 2 K. Zou, ur point s 100 % right..
K zou, these are 'ENDANGERED' species- means they are on the verge of extinction in their local habitats. If they are served in these favouritism-ridden corrupt festivals organised by thiteis in thiteipur, pretty soon they will be wiped out. There is indeed an urgent need to bring some kind of regulation to protect and safeguard these species. Let these Meiteis serve their ngaris, irombas and other dishes stolen from the Bengalis in their shitty festivals.
@K.Zou, Mr.Zou i really like your english and the way you express your point. But its sad to mention that only having good command over english doesn't make one complete. One has to be aware and educated on every field. I believe if you have been truely educated and good in current general awareness and what is really happening all over the world, its environment, its fauna and flora such a blatant error would have not occured as to support eating wild meat. My advise is lets not suport killing our future generation but help in protecting it.
K.Zou very well said, and yes thats an allround ok comment.. but i have an idea too... ok look, lets save these priceless animals just to show them to our coming generation, yes for our sons,,,, let them eat the meat and feel that taste too...come on man dont be so selfish...just kidin.... lets start something good, oh yeah why not...we can have pork,chiken,beef...
in dis modern world, apart from neccessity/requirement due to certain conditions any kind of meat can be consumed but generally as for "humans" it has been categorised into two types i.e, consumable meat n non consumable meat where d later category mainly stands for d protection of these endangered species for protecting them from extinction...thanx
In Sangai Fest, sangai meat is not served, only wild boar and porcupine??? That's depressing!!!
Those people who comment that they love animal are the real one who eat meat everyday, if given a wild aminal(any wild animal meat) even SANGAI they'll happily eat with their 1 m wide mouth open and said.... saasidi haokhare..haokhare... chatlaga thirushi/hadok lusi......... SHAMELESS PEOPLE JUST COMMENTING with no value.
I think the species like wildboar and porcupine doesn't come under endangered species categories. In some places these species have been declared as pest species. Their number and population size and distribution range is large enought that they are not threatened yet. Having said that it is the responsibility of everyone of us to protect them.. Wildlife hunting is a crime both by national and internnational laws. Its punishable offence
My dear K zou, you have written your way of thinking, but it seems you are not aware of the basics of protection and the idea behind conservation of flora and fauna. Even a whole race of humans can become extinct from earth, it can even be your tribe. So are the amimals like wild boars and procupines. Our culture of biting meat should not be an element to wipe out a species. Lets have some common sense man. We need to have critical and creative changes in our culture as per the need of the time. The idea that we are descended from the Neanderthals does not mean we should still keep throwing stone tools to hunt animals for food and game . We have changed and we need more changes from time to time.. That will not change you and me as a human though. Thank you
