Kaziranga, Dec 3: The Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation today completed a decade of its existence in the forests of Assam, including the famed Kaziranga National Park, during which it rescued over 3,000 animals, including endangered one-horned rhinos.
At a function organised today at the KNP, Assam Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wildlife Warden Suresh Chand congratulated the CWRC, the first of its kind rescue and rehabilitation centre set up in the country.
CWRC has established a relief protocol and proven to the world that "individual animal welfare is critical for conservation of key species," he said.
Commenting on the recent loss of animal life in the KNP due to floods, Chand said, "Security has been tightened and at present 235 platoons of Assam Forest Force, 170 armed home guards, 120 local armed youths, besides 400 regular forest staff are engaged in anti-poaching work."
Established in 2002, the CWRC has become an example for the world in the field of wildlife conservation, he said.
Chand said the CWRC has been functioning in a dedicated manner. No visitors are allowed in the centre's rehabilitation centre which is located inside the Kohora range in KNP.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director and CEO of Wildlife Trust of India Vivek Menon said earlier, animals suffered a lot during natural calamities like floods.
"It was then that the idea of setting up an effective rehabilitation centre was mooted," Menon said.
"The fact that nearly one animal a day has been saved during the last 10 years is satisfying. The protocol that the Centre has created is a fantastic contribution to conservation and the veterinarians have given hope to the state that this can change the region for years to come," Menon said.
Young Robinson, member of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said that during the last 10 years CWRC has created awareness among the global community about the importance of wildlife conservation.
Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Joyram Ingleng said there is a need for coordination among the forest departments of the Assam government and the council to protect the animals of KNP, particularly the rhinos.
During the monsoon and flood season, animals from the KNP cross National Highway 37 and migrate to the nearby Karbi Anglong hills. Assam government had earlier said a gang of poachers from Karbi Anglong were behind the killing of six rhinos this year and in a subsequent police operation, the poachers were arrested.
Regretting the fact that poachers from Karbi Anglong were behind the incidents, Ingleng said a coordination committee should be set up before the next monsoon season to prevent such incidents in future.
