Violence against women Media's role discussed

IMPHAL, Dec 7: A consultative meeting on role of media in prevention of violence against women was held today at Hotel Imphal under the aegis of Women Action for Development.

Highlighting various forms of violence against women from childhood to old age, Sobita Mangsatabam, general secretary of WAD in her key-note address said the meet was organised to thrash ways and means to check incidence of crime or violence against women.

She also highlighted the increasing cases of violence against women in the State.

Secretary of Centre for Social Development, U Nobokishore said women and children are directly affected by the armed conflict situation of the State. He also dwelt on the changing face of violence against women in the State, adding that once the State actors perpetrated the crime and now things have come in different angle too.

Seityajit Usham, editor of Hueiyen Lanpao (English) said that since the crime against women has become more complex, the role of media vis-a-vis the issue is becoming more composite.

He observed that media practitioners are confronted with troubles while trying to maintain media ethics and professional conduct. He also pointed out that the State lacks journalists specialised in crime/violence against women and issues relating to women.

Editor of People's Chronicle, Wahengbam Tiken said the perception of women as object by the media has victimised women while stressing on the need to highlight positive story of women in patriarchal society like in the State.

Dr Aribam Ibomcha Sharma, News Editor of AIR Imphal stressed on the need to highlight the struggle of victimised women relating to any crime or issue.

Editor of ISTV News, Helendro Maibam also spoke at the occasion.

Only discussions without effort will do nothing, the media should also spread awareness about how such thing came along. Especially at the early stage women should be given precautions about this through their parents, the role of parents is so immense that without their role no one can reduce this kind of violence in the state. Resturants are the major problem in this regard, they are helping in the spread of such kinds of problems. Media shoudl act against the resturants.
