Nupi Lan Day observed at Khergao

IMPHAL, Dec 11: The Pangal (Manipuri-Muslim) Political Forum has organised the 73rd Nupilal Remembrance Day at Cambridge Hr Sec School, Khergao.

Asserting that Manipuri-Muslim women had also participated in the Nupi Lan (Women's War) of 1939 against the British, the Pangal (Manipuri-Muslim) Political Forum has called upon the Government to append official recognition to the contribution made by the Manipuri Muslim women in the agitation.

The Nupi Lan Remembrance function was graced by MLA Laisom Ibomcha and Rose Mangshi Haokip, president of Kuki Women's Union as the chief guest and president respectively.

Chief Adviser of PPF, AR Khan; president of PPF AR Shah; working president of PPF, Azizul Haque Khan; vice-president Sitara Begum; Nazira Begum of Kshetrigao ZP; Khalida Begum, pradhan of Kshetrigao also attended the event as the guests of honour.

Recalling the background of the immediate cause of the Nupi Lal, spokesperson of PPF, MI Khan said many women of the State had joined the agitation against the British administration in 1939.

Lamenting that not a single Manipuri Muslim woman has been included in the list of women who fought the war as prepared by the Manipur Government and Nupilal Celebration Committee, MI Khan urged the Government to officially recognise the some Pangal women who participated in the war.

He said around ten Pangal women including Sara Bibi of Khergao Sabal Leikai, Sajou Bibi of Khergao Awang Leikai, Tombi Bibi of Keikhu, Garam Bibi of Khergao had fought the war.

Asserting that Muslim women have been taking active part in any issue that gripped the State like in the event of Nupi Lal, Sitara Begum rued that the contributions of the Muslim women have been always ignored and denied recognition.

Social activist Haji Salauddin stressed on the need to preserve and record the history of Manipuri Muslims while adding that many disadvantages cropped up in the absence of written records.

Delivering her speech, Rose Mangshi Haokip said the political, social and economic status of Muslim women in the State are low. He said in order to uplift the status of Muslim and Kuki women, the customary law needs to be altered.

Dr. M. Atiqur Rahman

In the history of Manipur Nupi-lal 1939, many muslim women participated actively but anybody from the government side or from other majority communities did not recognized so far. This is in fact an example of suppression of muslim women and its community. In this news, few names of participated muslim women in Nupi-lal has mentioned but the name of Bibi Khadi of Khetri Mayai Leikai is missing. She was one of the front liner who had actively participated during Nupi-lal. Time and peoples may go but their contribution will remain forever in the history Manipur Nupi-lal.4

M.A.Rahmna Khan

It is in true history of Manipur,PPF will be highly appreciated for the valuable programs,Dr.Atiqur Rahman thanks for your valuable comments and rememberance of Bibi Khadi,I do hope, honorable MLA L.Ibomcha will do for the importance of historical matters.
