A response to Salil Gewali’s article “Damning sex and the remedy”

Sir,

Due respect for the opposite sex is the last thing that is happening in the Indian society. In the name of "raising awareness about rapes", the directors of commercial films and TV soaps have completely succeeded in glamorising the brute crime of physical violation of female body and thereby managing to raise the TRP and ring the box office! The soaps and mainstream films portray rape scenes in a detailed and violent fashion not to remain obedient to the script, but merely to make a quick buck by exploiting the shameless voyeuristic mindset of the majority section of the populace. If the script indeed "demands" a rape scene, would it have to depicted from the very first step of looking towards the victim in a lecherous way to the ultimate violation with loads of nudity and skin show, that too continuing for almost eternity! Just look at the films of the truly golden era of cinema. A mere gesture, close-up of the shocked face of the victim, shrill cry of crow or flight of the frightened birds were enough to signify the commitment of a rape. Since the films of yesteryear were made with social responsibility in the mind and the directors were cultured and enlightened people who didn't ever dream to make money by exploiting the gruesome act of rape, the scenes were shot in such a restrained way.

But we are increasingly shedding our "conservativeness" and turning "bold" enough to show the rape scenes as in actual situation! And there also exists innumerable philistines in this morally-degraded society to lap it up; the producer laughing all the way to the bank! The glamorisation of philistine Bollywood, providing social sanction to dirty pictures bordering on pornography in the name of "art", nudity and vulgar dancing in night clubs, scantily-clad pictures and shots of women in print and visual media have absolutely devastated the moral fabric of the society. Thanks to this crass commercialisation of female bodies, the upcoming generation is treating the women merely as "sex objects"; leading to increasing incidents of eve-teasing, molestation and rapes. In this sorry perspective, the increasing incidents of horrific sexual attack on the hapless girls throughout the country are only to be expected.

Since the society, morally corrupted by a section of the media, feel immense pleasure in voyeurism or anything associated with display of women flesh and sex; violent incidents upon the fairer sex are filmed, instead of saving the vulnerable ones from the clutches of the monsters as was witnessed recently in Guwahati. This is the very reason why Bollywood pictures, where the camera continuosly hovers over the cleavage of more than half-naked heroine and rape scenes are shot in detail to titillate the spectators, are instantly lapped up by the society and emerge as super-hit! The situation has come to such a dreadful pass that even Kolkata High Court is left with no other option but to direct the producer of a certain Bollywood film to not exhibit posters of it depicting sexual performances! And the most dangerous trend lies in the fact that certain "modern" newspapers shamelessly take up the cudgel on behalf of the producers of those obscene films and feel no qualms in condemning even the judgement of the Honorable High Court! And the civilized lot who protest against such rampant obscenities in films and soaps get dubbed as people harbouring "primitive" mindset! Yes, certain vested but powerful interests in the media are working overtime to brainwash this society to believe that shedding of clothes and depiction of acts resembling the dogs on the street in certain seasons are the harbinger of "modernity"! They are indeed "fools" who think that learning to make and wear clothes formed one of the most important features of dawn of civilization! Unless the Censor Board and the relevant authorities act tough and terminate the shower of nakedness and obscenities in films, serials and reality shows in TV, print media, billboards exploiting semi-naked feminine bodies to advertise even a gent's shoe or shaving cream; no power in the world can prevent the moral corruptness in the society.

Yours faithfully,

Kajal Chatterjee
