Categorization of Meetei as General Caste: A grievous mistake

Sir,

The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur Valley’s (S.T.D.C.M.V.) demand as mentioned in their Memorandum submitted to his Excellency Governor of Manipur on 30/11/2012 for inclusion of the Meiteis of Manipur in the Scheduled Tribe list of Government of India, is exclusively based on the policy parameters of the Govt. of India on the matter. They claimed that any ethnic community of India included in the list of Scheduled Tribe have invariably fulfilled four criteria, namely i) One should be one of the stocks: Negritos, Austroloid or Mongoloid ii) of partial Hinduised iii) practising rituals of Animism and iv) should be the first settlers of the land.

In this regard, I am of the opinion that the Meiteis of Manipur are mongoloid as being proved by science and culture. They are also the first settlers of the valley of Manipur as proved by the pages of history. They though are Hindus, they are practising the rituals of the religious system which are prevalent prior to their adoption of Hinduism. They are practising rituals of Animism also.

Does the above narration of the Meeteis/Meiteis of Manipur not show their inclusion in the list for Scheduled Tribe a birth right?

Another reason treating the Meiteis as the most advanced national, as the case may be, is also baselessly errornous as the Meeteis are backward socially, educationally and economically. Further Meeti/Meiteis are not the descendants of any Hindu clan but inducted Hinduism forcibly by a King.

In this context, relooking into the categorization of Meeteis (mongoloid Stock) about eight lakh population only as the general class in the whole cross-section of far more advanced general class people of above one hundred twenty Crore, should be a much needed affair of the Union of India.

Now, the Meetei community as much as the north eastern people of India have been facing intolerable racial stigma at the hands of the general class people (categorized as general caste) of the other states by virtue of our poor physique (Mongoloid and Austroloid) and low socio-economic status since the merger of this State to the dominion of India.

Is not it a real phenomenon as deemed by the majority of the people of India that we are one of the indigenous tribes of the hill states of the North Eastern India which we have to welcome after a long sixtytwo years. A Grievious Mistake Breeds Irreparable Loss.

Yours faithfully,

Ningthoujam Nilachandra

Naoremthong Khulem Leikai, Imphal

T P Meitei

It is reasonable. Let us support the demand of "The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur Valley’s (S.T.D.C.M.V.)" for our constitutional protection. Thank you brother Ningthoujam Nilachandra for the right information.

Ha ha ha

I jst wonder in wat category will b..... Irengbam Singh Tribal, Chandra Kummar Tribal, Momoko IM Devi Tribal. Will we take the Singh, kumar, Devi or the Tribal.... WoW funtastic demand, Okram Ibobi Singh Tribal need to fulfil the demand. Long Live "MEITEI HAO"..

P Nassir-u-din Shah

What is the strategy of the The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur Valley’s (S.T.D.C.M.V.)" as of now? Many street corner meeting and public mobilization can be started for this demand to be success. If this demand is success, Manipur integrity and territorial boundary can be protected permanently.

Mr J

The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur Valley’s (S.T.D.C.M.V.)" why are you so slow in the demand. the MTPRM is another non-existent organization form suddenly issuing press release putting the name Manipur. Call Movement for Tribal right for , Zalegam/ Movement for Tribal right for Nagalaim. Since you are outside the govt. of Manipur, what is you interest in Manipur. ST status of Meitei is our birth right deliberately neglected by GoI for the last 65 year since the merger of Manipur to India. Meitei younger generations and present history is written by GoI. Only the central government can give the demand to meitei community. Our SoO group under URF/KCP must be given power to negotiate with GoI. If URF/KCP rise this issue to the ceasefire talk with GoI, you people can be called hero; earlier you are called thief. Do some homework for the society. Your muscle power need to be flex as do KNO/UPF/IM so that the helpless nature of meitei can have a hope. Other UGs are good for nothing. We have no confidence to them. Only URF/KCP your negotiation is a hope for us.

tom

very good, i agree, but what about the tribels, can they compete with us, (meiteis).... they will think that this againts the interest of tribels..... they are mentally and socially on step down,

khalemba

Mr. TOM it does not matter who will compete or not. Why you relates things with other. This is the right of meetei by birth. We dont like dirty orthodox Hindu Bamol system, we like to revibe our own. Whoever that does not like might be the decendend of Mayang Bengali, UP, Bihar. We are not, so has to have own identity. This is our right by birth, as traibal.

Right

Very good article. I support it. It will be difficult task to do but it must be done. I will be the solution of many existing problems. By the way, Th. Muivah is the right name, Th. Muivah Tribal is wrong. Ha Ha Ha whatever name you called the Meitei it won't hurt our sentiment.

Ng Boy

ST status should be supported by all Meitei community. As said by brother MrJ, our civil societies and people give pressure to URF for an important agenda of the talk in the SoO talk with GoI. The agenda of IMF and STDCMV must be incorporated in the talk. These demand issue should sounded more than other divisive agenda of UNC/IM/ANSAM.

Tribal King Urkhul

The idea is good but I am tired to be a tribal, I would like to be in the general caste like Meities. So all the people of Manipur be categorized in the same caste the general caste.
