IMPHAL, Jan 19: The All Tribal Students’ Union Mani-pur (ATSUM)-sponsored 24-hr general strike has thrown normal life out of gear in the hill districts today.
The strike was reported to have immense impact in Ukhrul, Tamenglong and Churachandpur districts.
Inter-district passenger service to and from the districts remained off the road though private vehicles were seen plying.
Delegates and vehicles used for youth conference of Rongmei Naga Baptist Church at Tamenglong hea-dquarters were exempted from the purview of the strike, said ATSUM spea-ker Majabung Gangmei.
Strike enforcers also clo-sed down shops and esta- blishments at Thangal and Paona Keithels this morning before 10.
However, with the intervention of Imphal West district police commandos, shops resumed normal chores.
A bus, two mini buses and an LPG carrier were stoned by strike supporters today at Kanglatombi along NH-2. No casualty has been reported though.
ATSUM has been calling the general strike on various demands including setting up of Manipur State Commission for ST, providing adequate infrastructure to the Regional Campus of IGNTU and other educational institutions in the hill districts, etc.
ATSUM had earlier announced to launch intense agitation other than the general strike if their demands are not met immediately.
It may be mentioned that several tribal students’ organisations have announced to resist the ATSUM sponsored strike while some pledged support to ATSUM.
Questioning the legitimacy of the present ATSUM, several tribal student organisations like SDSA, NSUC and KSO have announced not to extend support to the strike.
On the other hand, bodies like ZSF, ZSUM, IGNTUSU, TKS endorsed the strike.
There is big ??????...behind the facts dat ATSUM called bandh '4 the welfare of the tribals' . Somehow it indicates dat the bandh is being implemented jus 4 a mere publicity stunt, 'a seeking road' 2 the govt 4 their own introduction or their 'personal vendetta' to the kso dat their dominance/leadership is genuine. A thirst 4 leadership in studnts body....???.Watever the reason might be leaders in both the body's should not in anyway use the press 2 address their difrnce any further, rather it would be wise 2 solve internal subjects within close doors. And it is very very dis-heartening to saw vehicles plying around wen de state most trusted tribalstudent unions called bandhs in this bandhpur. Hope not to see dis again ...
Hello, in churachandpur the bandh is effective inonly about a strech of a kilometre that is from Zenhangbazar(old bazar) to new lamka. Veheces plying between Imphal and CCpur too are normaly at service except that the Station is shifted one Km closer to imphal..... even those vehecle plying between Sugnu and CCpur are plying very well normally. Please get the acurate news
From Mao to Moreh via Kangpokpi-Imphal, Imphal-Churachanpurand Imphal-Chandel was free and i don't see any disturbance on the normal life rather it looks as if there was no bandh.
Now i came to know why i shouldn't relyon manipur newspapers. How come they published that ccpur is totally affected by ATSUM bandh? Just becoz Singlianmang guite(paite), who is the correspondent of sangai has reported it? Let u see it in real rather than depending on d input by communal reporter. Atleast ask those passenger bus drivers in keishampat for the truth. Hopeless newspaper.
