‘Surrender agents’ held, house dismantled

IMPHAL, Jan 19: A mother-son duo who reportedly ga- thered a number of youngsters to take part in army’s surrender functions have been rounded up by people and handed over to police.

Their house has also been vandalised by a mob.

Haorungbam Surchandra alias Kabui alias Naoba (30) of Khurai Chingangbam Lei-kai and his mother Chitra (50) were rounded up by the local people this afternoon.

Surchandra had surrende-red to 5/9 Gorkha Rifles as a cadre of PREPAK (Pro).

Surchandra yesterday ma-de a proposal to one Thang- jam Tolen (27) of the same locality who had retired from UNLF to civilian life to surrender to the army.

Surchandra told Tolen, who is now earning his livelihood as an auto-rickshaw driver that he would get Rs 3 lakhs and monthly honora-rium of Rs 2000/3000 if they surrender to the army.

Even though Tolen rejec-ted Surchandra’s proposal, the latter said that he had already submitted names, ad- dresses and photographs of some youngsters of the locality to 5/9 GR.

Surchandra alias Kabui also threatened Tolen saying that he would kill all the family members of Tolen if his proposal and disclosure was conveyed to any third person.

Joining his son in the plot, Surchandra’s mother Chitra told Tolen’s mother Gambhini to go to 5/9 GR and delete Tolen’s name from the ‘list’ if he should not surrender.

As local people came to know about all these activities and plots, Chitra was pulled up last night while Surchandra fled away.

On searching their house, a temporary identity card issued to Surchandra alias Nao- ba by 5/9 GR was recovered though it had expired on Ja-nuary 15 last.

A leaflet about surrender of UG cadres which was written with the words “5/9 GR Friends of Manipur People” was also found from Surchandra’s house.

Even though these recoveries enraged all the people, Chitra was let off on her assurance that she would pro- duce her son next morning.

Surchandra was seen this afternoon and he was round-ed up by the local people from near Lamlong bridge. The mother-son duo were taken to T Munal LP School campus where they were subjected to intensive questioning.

Shortly after, a team of Porompat Police arrived at the scene and an uproar ensued as the police team tried to take away the mother and the son.

Later, an understanding was reached between the two sides following which the mother and the son were taken away by police.

Even as the surrender agents were taken away by police, an infuriated mob vandalised their home in the evening.

maximus

It is a gesture that 'good trums over evil ' n it is indeed very 'civilized thought' the locals had dat they entrusted the law to the right mechenaries. Hats off 2 such leaders who don take the law in their own hands.

Life One aka Rov Meetei

This seems to be just a tip of the iceberg considering the number of so called ‘home coming’ dramas are held from time to time in the state with much political fanfare. Army – middlemen nexus for all the wrong reasons is doing much harm than they usually portray in their publicity hungry military action plans. The current happenings are the result of a meticulously well planned design by the security agencies to jeopardise the future of our youngsters by taking advantages of state`s restlessness and rampant unemployment. Such designs are eating up our families and now our families are fighting each other. What a clever, though sinister, plan it was in the name of counter insurgency? What is the solution to get rid off from such situations? Stop dreaming of easy money and know your honeyed lip neighbours and work sincerely to gain your legitimate livelihood. This will save you at least falling from somebody`s trap.
