Burning of Puya : Puwarigi Amamba Numit observed

IMPHAL, Oct 16: The Puya Mei Thakhibagi Apunba Ningshing Lup (PUMANIL) Kangleipak today observed “Puwarigi Amamba Numit” at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound in commemoration of the 287th anniversary of burning of the Puya, the scripture of ancient Meitei/Meetei.
As part of the programme, a ritual ceremony was performed by the volunteers of PUMANIL and other attendees in front of Kangla Uttra Shanglen where the ancient scriptures were burnt down.
Speaking as the chief guest of the function, Keirao AC MLA Lourembam Rameshwar said that the written records (Puyas) left by the Meitei/Meetei ancestors include many valuable lessons which can be practiced on daily basis for a healthy and prosperous future.
Stating that experts from foreign countries termed the flora of Manipur as "Green Diamond" which have a huge potential to improve the economy of the State by using it in medicinal purposes, he appealed the research scholars concerned to pen a thesis on Puya so that the students can accumulate a thorough understanding about the ancient scripture.
President i/c of ACOAM-Lup Kangleipak, Sanjit Soraisam said that the burning of the Puya during the reign of King Pamheiba on October 5, 1732 AD was the most devastating event in the history of Manipur.
Conveying that every community  take pride in their custom and tradition left behind by their ancestors, Sanjit Soraisam appealed all to contribute their share in promoting and preserving the unique culture of all community residing in Manipur.
The observance was also attended by PUMANIL chairman Leimapokpam Dhananjoy; International awardee H Ibotombi Khuman; KANGLAMEI, president Y Leirik Leima; KIL president, RK Sanahanbi; Manipur Pandit Loishang, Pana Pandit, Lai Loken and CLK, president Ch Pakpi Chanu as dignitaries and research scholar, Akham Langol and Assistant Professor Dr L Basanti Devi of Standard College, History Department as resource  persons.
