Dy CM releases disaster management project report

Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh released a project report on “Disaster Management System of Manipur” at his Secretariat office chamber  here today.
The project which has been prepared  by Mani-pur Remote Sensing Appli- cations Centre (MARSAC) was funded and sponsored by North Eastern Council (NEC) in 2012-13.
The Deputy Chief Minister, who is also the Chair- man of MARSAC said that the report was prepared using satellite imagery, drone footages and real time information and would be used in implementing schemes by various departments to mitigate natural disasters in the State.
He said, impacts of natural disasters like flood, landslide and earthquake on human lives should be acknowledged by all stakeholders. The departments concerned would use the data to reduce hazards at time of disasters.
Appreciating the efforts made by MARSAC in giving valuable information and data on various sectors, he advised all departments concerned to implement schemes and programmes in advance so as to reduce loss of live and property during disasters.
Commissioner (Science & Technology), Bobby Waikhom said, the report will be of immense benefit to various departments like Relief & Disaster Management, Water Resources, PWD, CADA, Agriculture, Forestry & Environment. He said, it will also provide very useful information to various agencies in their disaster management planning processes.
Director of MARSAC, Dr N Randhir Singh said, the scope of the project encompasses hazard zonation on earthquake, landslide and flood as these are the natural disasters that frequently affect the State.
In case of earthquake hazard zonation, data are collected for the last 100 years and plotted on a GIS map. Under the present project, landslide hazard zonation study is carried out along the major highways i.e State and National Highways.
Different models are adopted for flood hazard zonation which will be very useful to Water Resources Department, Disaster Management Department and others stakeholders, he said.
Director (Science & Tech) Elangbam Ibocha Singh and Chief Engineers of Works and Minor Irrigation Departments were also present at the gathering.
