Shillong, Nov 6: A delay on the part of the district administration of East Khasi Hills (EKH) has resulted in a lot of angst in the Balat border haat as trade and commerce there has been severely affected.
Raising this issue with the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of EKH district, Matsiewdor War Nongbri, a delegation of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Balat Border Area Circle has expressed grave concern in the delay in announcing the names of vendors who are authorized to conduct business at this border haat.
“People in the border area are facing great hardship because of this delay,” KSU Balat Border Area Circle president, Bonsen Snaitang informed the DC on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the student body has expressed its concern over the rampant killing of aquatic life in the rivers in the area. Alleging that people with vested interests are killing huge quantities of fish by using chemicals and explosives, Snaitang has urged the DC to intervene in the matter.
He also urged the DC to summon the village heads and the Syiems and to instruct them not to lease out stretches of these rivers to private parties. The DC meanwhile has assured that the issues raised on the day will be looked into and that action is expedited.
