Workshop on rights of PwDs held

A workshop on "Rights of persons with disabilities, career counselling and soft skills" for students with disabilities was organised by Shishu Sarothi, under Bharati Infratel Scholarship Programme, in collaboration with Spastic Society of Manipur.
A press release issued by Director, Spastic Society of Manipur stated that the workshop is an endeavour to create awareness on disability rights with particular focus on Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 and career guidance cum counselling for students with disabilities of Manipur.
It continued that the workshop focuses on Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, special provisions for persons with benchmark disabilities, free education between 6-18 years, reservation of not less than 5 percent seats for persons with benchmark disabilities at all Government institutions of higher education, upper age relaxation of five years for admission in institution of higher studies and 4 percent reservation in jobs.
It said that Spastic Society Manipur, now functioning at Tapokpi Bazar, Langthabal Kunja is a composite centre for empowerment of persons with disabilities.
The organisation received the National Award for Best Institution 2008 for empowerment of persons with disabilities.
On the other hand, it continued that Shishu Sarothi is a right-based, non-government, non- profit organisation which offers a range of services for children with physical and developmental disabilities.
Based in North East, it was established in 1987 with the main focus of empowering children and youth and help them live their life in equity. Services provided by Shishu Sarothi for PwDs include education, livelihood, advocacy and health.
It further stated that Bharati Infratel Scholarship Program is a CSR initiative of Bharati Infratel Ltd which was implemented across North East in association with Shishu Sarothi.
The scholarship aims to promote inclusion of students with disabilities so that they can lead an independent life.
196 students have been supported under the program out of which 28 are from Manipur, it added.
