Shillong, Dec 18: Pressure groups comprising the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Ri Bhoi Youth Organization (RBYF) and Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) have warned the government both at the Centre and the State not to play with the tribal people in Meghalaya.
This warning was issued during a public meeting conducted by the RBYF at Umsning playground on Wednesday to enlighten the people of the area about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 and also to demand the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
A large number of people from Ri Bhoi district thronged the public meeting to show their support to the demand implementation of the ILP in Meghalaya and repeal of the CAA.
Speaking at this public meeting, FKJGP president, Welbirth Rani slammed the Central and State Governments for "hurting the sentiments" of tribal people through the CAA in spite of the strong opposition against it.
He also said that the people of the state will never allow a ‘draconian law’ like CAA to be implemented in the state.
He also opined that it is the need of the hour for the people of the state to voice their concerns over the CAA.
Other leaders who spoke in the public meeting include RBYF president, Bipul Thangkhiew, KSU General Secretary, Donald Thabah and central vice president of HNYF, Scan Rani who all expressed their deep concerns over the present situation in the state after the CAB was passed.
