Committee visits women inmates in jail

IMPHAL, Dec 7: The Manipur Legislative Assembly Women and Child Committee inspected the condition of women inmates at the Central Jail in Old Lambulane today.
The committee's Chairman MLA Akoijam Mirabai,  Wabagai AC MLA Md Fajur Rahim, Wangjing-Tentha MLA Paonam Brojen, Hiyanglam AC MLA Dr Radheshyam Yumnam, Jiribam MLA Asab Uddin, Thanga MLA Tongbram Robindro and other officials including Social Welfare Director Ng Uttam, Deputy Director Binobala Nongmeikapam, Deputy Secretary Gangmei Ganguilu and ICPDS Programme Officer Sandhyarani Mangsatabam met the women inmates and enquired about their needs, condition and treatment receiving at the jail.
Talking to reporters after the inspection, committee Chairman MLA AK Mirabai said that the women inmates are engaging themselves in various vocational trainings and earning income inside the jail.
The overall assessment of the present condition of the jail and treatment women inmates are receiving were found satisfactory, she said stating that the inmates are reforming themselves by engaging themselves in various activities, trainings including kitchen gardening.
The inmates were promised to increase the intake capacity in vocational training from 15 to 30 during the inspection, she said adding that more inmates will be able to engage themselves in the training programmes soon. The inmates were also encouraged to reform themselves, engage in trainings imparted to them and lead healthy and good life, she said.
Mirabai also lauded the jail authority for their efforts in reforming the inmates and meeting required service standards. The committee will continue to inspect and monitor functioning of all children and women related institutions and facilities including children homes, Anganwadi centres, schools etc, she added.
