Solid Wastes

IMPHAL, May 9: The National Green Tribunal has instructed the State Government to come up with district management plans concerning solid waste management and sewerage of District HQs and towns of the State, within a period of one month.
Following the directive, a meeting of officials of Forest Department, Rural Development, PHED, Health and DCs, chaired by Chief Secretary Dr Suresh Babu, was held at Old Secretariat conference hall today, to asses the current situation of solid waste and sewerage management.
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary instructed the DCs and the authorities concerned to produce a management plan to facilitate proper and scientific disposal of the solid waste and sewerage coming out from the District HQs and towns, within a month.
District level committees, headed by the respective DCs, were also constituted to look into the process as well.
The Chief Secretary also tasked the DCs with identifying 3 villages, including DHQs, from each district to implement solid waste and sewerage works as role model.
On the other hand, the Chief Secretary, along with Atul Bagai, Indian Head of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), reviewed the current environment condition of the State and discussed steps for conservation of the environment.
During the meeting, long term protection of the State ecology was also discussed  and the officials of the State also urged the UNEP Indian Head to initiate a study of the pollution in the State's rivers.
The State Government also urged the UNEP Indian Head to sanction funds for Imphal Sewerage Project Phase II.
