One dies as railing of building next to RK Book House collapses

IMPHAL, May 10: One man was killed while three others sustained injuries when certain portions of an old building collapsed near RK Book House this afternoon.
According to information culled from the spot, a man was crushed to death when the railing of an old building located near RK Book House, Paona Bazar (adjacent to BT Road) collapsed at around 3.55 pm.
Altogether four persons sustained injuries in the collapse.
Even though, City Police took all the injured persons to RIMS, a man in the age group of 50-55 years succumbed to the injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Serto Soweikhup Kom (60) of Langol Game Village.
Sources said that the buildings adjacent to RK Book House are old, dating back to nearly 50 years or more.
The injured victims have been identified as Thounaojam Kisan (28) of Mayang Imphal, Tungsin Mushel (55) of Sandang Semba Maring Khul and MK Sangkhu (50).
It is said that Tungsin and Sangkhu are vendors on the nearby footpath while Kisan is a labourer.
The building whose railings collapsed today is registered in the name of two brothers belonging to Langjing.     
Meanwhile MAHUD Minister Th Shyamkumar has expressed deep pain and sorrow on the death of one individual and injuries of three others when some portions of a building collapsed today.
Speaking to media persons at his New Secretariat office today after visiting the site, Shyamkumar assured all possible assistance from the side of the State Government to all the victims.
While terming the particular incident as a very unfortunate one, Shyamkumar regretted that State Government cannot announce any concrete relief measures for the victims at the moment as the election model code of conduct is still in force.  
Underscoring the need for collective efforts of all stake holders to avoid such unfortunate incidents in future, the MAHUD Minister said that there are many buildings inside Imphal city  which are very old but whitewashed or painted fresh so that they look new. He said that there is a growing need to collect reports about when each and every building of Imphal city were constructed.   Claiming that Chief Minister N Biren has been keeping a close watch to avoid such tragic accidents, Shyamkumar all necessary measures would be taken up once the election model code of conduct lapses.
