36th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial observed

IMPHAL, May 19: Manipur Network of Positive People (MNP+) and Project Sunrise/FHI360 with the support of Manipur State AIDS Control Society observed '36th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial' Sunday at the office of MNP+, Yaiskul Hiruhanba Leikai.
The programme under the theme "Intensifying the fight for health and rights" was attended by Abhiram Mongjam, Joint Director (TI) MACS, Hijam Dinesh Singh, president Kripa Society, RK Tiken Singh, general secretary SASO and L Deepak Singh, president MNP+.
Speaking at the event, Abhiram Mongjam said that the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is one of the world's oldest and largest grassroot level mobilization campaigns for HIV awareness. Started in 1983, the memorial takes place every third Sunday in May and is led by a coalition of some 1,200 community organizations in 115 countries. Historically the memorial was started by people living with HIV to give a face to the epidemic.
With 33 million people living with HIV today, the memorial serves as an important intervention for global solidarity, breaking down barriers of stigma and discrimination and give hope to new generation.
The dignitaries and the gathering lit candles and paid tributes to departed souls who were victim of HIV/AIDS.
Nirvana Foundation, Khurai Tinsid Road also observed 36th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day, 2019 at its office, today.
Dr N Romila Devi, District AIDS Control Officer, Vikram Nepram, president, MACS Partner NGO’s Forum and  Sobhana Sorokhaibam, secretary Nirvana Foundation graced the function as presidium members. Dr N Romila spoke about the importance of giving proper awareness about HIV/AIDS to the masses. She also urged youth and students to distance themselves from illegal drugs/intoxicants to lead a healthy lifestyles.
