IMPHAL, May 20: Police carried out an eviction drive against illegal encroachment along the ever busy RIMS road today, during which a number of items kept on either side of the road, including  advertising banners were seized and taken away.
The drive was carried out under the supervision of SP Traffic, K Sarma, by a large number of Traffic and Imphal West district police personnel with the aim of ensuring free  traffic movement along the busy road.
It may be mentioned that prior to the drive today, a notice was issued by the SP Traffic Control Police Wing, directing the hospitals, clinics, laboratories, shopkeepers/ vendors and other business units to remove their items from either side of the road by yesterday as the area had been declared as two wheeler and four wheeler parking space by Imphal Municipal Corporation.
During the eviction today, a large number of items kept on the road side including sign boards and hoardings of private hospitals and clinics, as well as sand, bricks and other construction materials piled up on the roadside and footpath were seized by the police.
Speaking to media persons, one of the commuters said such a step should have been taken up earlier as such items have resulted in immense hardship to the people due to the traffic congestion on the road which leads towards RIMS.
He also said that in some emergency cases, the frequent traffic congestions lead to injured patients getting stuck in the middle of the road and appealed to the authority concerned to take such similar steps on other important roads and to not let the step taken up today end as a short term drama.
On the other hand, SP Traffic police said that legal action will be taken up against owners of the seized items, for misusing public property and blocking traffic.
