Lawyers protest May 18 vandalism

IMPHAL, May 20 : Members of the All Manipur Bar Association and High Court Bar Association Manipur, staged a sit-in-protest in front of Cheirap Court complex today, condemning the assault on lawyers and the damaging of a Court located at Lamphel by an angry mob on May 18.
Speaking to media persons, president in-charge of AMBA, Brajit Singh strongly condemned the mob violence and added that the Court will have full responsibility for prisoners who are under trial in any case.
He further expressed that no one, even Ministers and MLAs, can escape punishment if they are found guilty during a trial.
It is the Court which will decide whether an individual is guilty or not and no one else, he added.
Highlighting various past incidents involving damage to Court in mob violence,  he said that there might be a lapse of security and added that to prevent such incident in the future, the State Government and the Home Department should make adequate security arrangements in the Court complex.
He further appealed to the people not to take part in any such type of violence, which is becoming a trend in the society.
Informing that a number of legal awareness programmes have been conducted in different parts of the State to prevent people from indulging in mob violence, he said that it takes time to deliver justice as per the Indian law but it will definitely deliver justice to the victims.A large number of lawyers and advocate condemned the assault on an advocate mob and the destruction of Court property.
They also appealed to the authority concerned to look into the matter.
After the sit in protest, AMBA and HCBAM adopted six resolutions concerning the incident of May 18.
On the other hand, the Bar Council of Manipur has also strongly condemned the mob violence of May 18 at Lamphel Court complex.
