July 23, 2009 case transferred to Session Court Imphal East, July 15 fixed for further proceeding

IMPHAL, Jun 17: Session Court Imphal East has registered a case in connection with the July 23, 2009 BT Road firing incident and fixed July 15 for further proceedings against then City OC, Y Munal, and eight other police personnel.
The case record of the trial was received by Session Court Imphal East after it was transferred from Session Court Imphal West following an order from the High Court of Manipur. During the proceeding today, Session Court Imphal East registered the trial case and all the accused persons, except Y Munal who had filed an application for dispensing his personal appearance, were present before the Court.
The case is in the stage of prosecution hearing.
Session Judge Imphal West, on May 13, requested the Registrar, High Court of Manipur to transfer the July 23, 2009 ( BT Road firing incident) case to any other competent Court after it found that Senior Advocate L Lakhikanta, who is a senior while she was practising, is leading the defense counsel of the accused persons, except Th Herojit and as such it would not be proper for her to try the case any further.
The High Court of Manipur, on May 24, transferred the trial from Session Court Imphal West to Imphal East. It may be mentioned that the trial began before then Session Judge Manipur East on November 23, 2015, after charges were framed against the accused cops, then City OC, Y Munal, Hijam Devendro, Thounajam Herojit, Ngangom Toyaima, Wahengbam Binoykumar, Thokchom Jagat, Md Imran Khan, Oinam Keshor and Makan Kanchup Chothi, based on the charge sheet submitted by CBI. Thokchom Rabina and Chungkham Sanjit were killed in the incident.
