Amit Shah to remain party chief as... JP Nadda named BJP working president

Former Union Minister JP Nadda was elected as the National working president of the BJP at the party’s Parliamentary board meeting on Monday evening.
Amit Shah, who has entered the Narendra Modi Cabinet as the Home Minister, will continue to be BJP chief and will likely see the party through Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand later this year.
“The BJP won several elections under leadership of Amit Shah ji. But since PM appointed him Home Minister, Amit Shah ji himself said the responsibility of party president should be given to someone else. The BJP Parliamentary board has selected JP Nadda as working president,” senior leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told reporters.
The low-profile leader from Himachal Pradesh was in the reckoning for the post of BJP president after it came to power in 2014. But Shah, with a stellar performance in Uttar Pradesh under his belt, was instead chosen to be at the helm of affairs.
Nadda, who was brought to the National team by Nitin Gadkari in 2010, had to then settle for a position in the Union Cabinet. However, he was seen as first amongst equals in the peer group.
