Nagaland bans plastic carry bags

DIMAPUR, Jun 21: The Government of Nagaland has imposed a total ban on single-use plastics in the State.  This was notified in a Nagaland Gazette Extraordinary Notification. This notification was issued with the approval of the State Cabinet in its meeting held on June 10 last and communicated vide O.M. NO.CAB-2/2013(N) dated June 12.
The move of the Nagaland Government is to “eradicate the menace of plastic and the serious environmental and ecological challenges posed by rampant use of plastics.”  The latest notification is in continuation of the State Government’s notification on November 29, 2018. Any individual, institution/commercial establishment (edu- cational institutions, offices, hotels, shops, restaurants, religious institutions, industrial establishments, banquet halls etc.) will have to abide by the aforesaid “total ban” and “any breach shall be liable for penalties.”
The plastic products which will be totally banned in Nagaland after 3 months are (a) all plastic carry bags, with or without handles, irrespective of thickness and size; (b) Plastic cutlery including plates, plastic cups, straws, stirrers etc.; (c) Cutlery and other decorative made of Styrofoam (Thermocol); (d) Polythene; (e) Nylon; (f) Poly-Vinyl-Carbohydrates (PVC); (g) Poly-Propylene; and (h) Poly-Styrene.
The notification said that single-use plastics, often also referred to as disposable plastics (use-and-throw items), are commonly used for plastic packaging and include items intended to be used only once before they are thrown away or recycled.
"These include, among other items, carry bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups and cutlery," it added.
