IMPHAL, Jul 14: Locals of Chana village under Lamlai AC in Imphal East are without adequate drinking water, said Nongmaikon Progressive Youth Club (NPYC) general secretary Okensana Oinam.
Speaking to media persons Okensana said that the village has no river and lakes in its vicinity. The locals depend on only two ponds for water, he said expressing concern that the ponds are drying up due to sluggish rain.
The scarcity of water in the ponds and unavailability of clean drinking water have added salt to the woes of the locals who are already worried about their failing agriculture due to water shortage, he said.
A local social worker - Mongjam Poireihenba has delivered 5 water tankers for the locals, he said appealing others to provide their helping hands too. NPYC welcomes all help, he said.
Meanwhile, Poireihenba put the blame on the 'failed' water supply scheme in the area for the drinking water scarcity in the area. The scheme has not been able to supply water regularly, he asserted and appealed authorities concerned to look into the grievances of the people of the area and inspect the functioning of the water supply scheme concerned.
Appealing the local MLA to look into the needs of the locals, he informed that villagers of Nongren and Nongdam will also be provided drinking water.
