IMPHAL, Aug 17: Th Saimon Singh, Session Judge, Thoubal, passed a landmark judgment related to crimes against women by convicting one Mayang-lambam Khellendro alias Amujao (41) for the murder and robbery of a woman, while acquitting his (Khellendro's) wife from the case.
The judgment order was announced in an open Court today, after a 5 year long trial against the convict and his wife for the murder of one Keisham Premila in April 2012 at Kakching Mahadeva hill. The Court also fixed August 20 for the sentence hearing and announcement of the quantum of punishment.
The convict, Mayanglam-bam Khellendro s/o Radha- mohan of Kakching Wang-ma Ningthou Pareng, was produced before the Court while his wife, who was on bail, also appeared as well.
The case began against the convict after he was arrested by a team of Thoubal district police on April 16, 2012, (after he had been on the run for some time) after the charred body of the victim was found on April 10 the same year at Mahadeva hill.
Earlier, before the charred body was found, the father of the victim had lodged a complaint at Kak-ching PS on March 26, stating that his  daughter had been missing since she went out from their residence the previous day.
On April 10, a charred body was found at Mahadeva hill and was identified by the family members of the victim after looking at the remains, burnt cloth, and other times as well as a ring recovered from the spot.
During the investigation of the case, the identity of the convict was identified as Mayanglambam Khellendro and a mobile phone used by him was seized from the possession of his younger sister.
During interrogation, the convict admitted to committing the heinous crime and disclosed that he fell in love with the victim and he had called out the victim from her parental home on the pretext of eloping with him.
He revealed that they went towards Mahadeva hill where they had intimate relations.
After staying for some time at the hill, the victim tried to make a call to her father through her phone at which he picked up a stick and hit the victim on her head.
The convict disclosed that the victim died instantly on the spot and after committing the heinous crime, he hid the weapon and took a gold chain, gold earrings and mobile phone of the victim.
Thereafter he dragged the dead body inside a thick bush and left the place. He came back after some days to the same spot and burned the dead body using kerosene to make it impossible to identify the victim.
He also disclosed that he gave the gold chain and gold earring to his wife and as such, his wife was also arrested by police on April 22.
The IO of the case (then SDPO Kakching) A Ghanashyam Sharma submitted the charge sheet against the convict and his wife on June 28, 2013, after proper investigation of the case and charges were framed against the duo on December 19 same year.
The trial began in the early part of 2014 and during the 5 year long trial, 28 prosecution witnesses were examined by the Court.
After going through all the submissions and case records, the Session Court convicted Mayanglambam Khellendro.
However, the Court acquitted Khellendro's wife, Mayanglambam Thoinu, from the case.
The Court also directed the SP of Sajiwa Central Jail to produce the convict before the Court on August 20 for the sentence hearing and announcement of the quantum of punishment.
