Meira rallies

IMPHAL, Aug 18: Police fired several tear gas shells to disperse a meira rally at Thangmeiband today, apart from preventing any further attempts to organise similar rallies in the area.
Meira rallies were carried out in various parts of the State today to demand justice in the mysterious death of Ningthoujam Babysana inside the hostel of Standard Robarth Hr Secondary Schoolon July 18.
Many people came out of their homes to take part in the meira rally at Thangmeiband but police, who were already deployed in the area, prevented the rally from being carried out.
Various tear gas shells were fired by the police to disperse the people and they (police) also foiled other attempts to organise similar rallies, apart from seizing the torches as well.
On the other hand, the State police also went on a drive at various locations of the State today, seizing all the torches in a bid to foil the planned meira rallies.
It may be mentioned that meira rallies condemning the incident were organised at Kwakeithel Thiyam Leikai, Nongmeibung, Thouda Bha-bok Leikai, Kadangban, Phayeng, Lairenkabi, San-jenbam, Heirongpokpi, Awang Potshangbam Khu-llen and Keibul Lamjao.
