The villagers of Khongjom Circle including Chingtham, Sapam, Khongjom and Tekcham are reportedly facing acute shortage of water due to continued dry spell this year which not only ruined their standing crops but also made their life miserable due to limited access to water for drinking and other household needs as water sources like ponds were dried up.
Speaking to this correspondent, Secy Samphabi Memorial Club Tekcham, Naorem Lokhol said that all the standing crops in Khongjom Circle spanning over an arable land of 50,000 Pari at Yawa loukol, Pankhok loukol, Pangal loukol, Wainou loukol, Khajing loukol, Siphai loukol and Chingtham Maning loukol failed to yield due to shortage of water. Even water for daily necessity are also very limited for the villagers, he added.
He also pointed out the canal that connects Heirok from Khongjom river and another canal from Langthabal that past through many villages could not supply adequate water to interior canals in Khongjom Circle due to host of issues like blockage at many points.
Villagers are also apprehensive of the bigger problem they may face due to drying up of many ponds in the area including the water source of Tekcham Water Supply Scheme, he continued and urged the authority concerned to take up some concrete action at the earliest so that the villagers do not have to face the extreme water crisis.
