Sentence hearing on Aug 29

IMPHAL, Aug 20: Th Saimon, Session Judge, Thoubal, fixed August 29 for the sentence hearing against murder convict, Mayanglambam Khellendro alias Amujao (41), after appointing Amicus Curiae for the sentence hearing today.
Mayanglambam Khellendro s/o Radhamohan of Kakching Wangma Ningthou Pareng, was produced before the Court from the judicial custody of Sajiwa Central Jail and during the hearing, the APP of the State as well as the counsel of the victim's family, were present before the Court for the sentence hearing.
However, the defense counsel of the convict was absent and none of his associate advocates were present before the Court as well and as such, the hearing could not be proceed any further.
The Court explained the inconvenience to the convict and also asked the possibility of engaging a counsel by him or by the Court in which the convict expressed his willingness for appointing a lawyer by the Court.
Accordingly, the Court appointed Advocate L Gambhir Singh, who was present as Amicus curies for the convict.
The Court then directed relevant papers of the case to be provided to the Advocate, apart from making it clear that the appointment of amicus curiae would not bar the defense counsel of the convict and his associate advocate to conduct sentence hearing.
As per the prayer by the amicus curiae, the matter was fixed for sentence hearing on August 29 against Khellendro.
The Court then remanded Khellendro into judicial custody till August 29 and directed the jail authority to produce him without failed so as to proceed with the sentence hearing.
It may be mentioned that Mayanglambam Khellendro was convicted in connection with the murder and robbery of Keisham Premila at Kakching Mahadeva hill in March of 2012 and he has been lodged in judicial custody remand since April the same year.
