Nagaland on the go to ban plastics from Oct 1

DIMAPUR, Aug 29 : The Government of Nagaland is working out strategies and action plans to ban 'single use plastics' from October 1, 2019.
Towards this effort and with regard to Kohima district, the newly constituted District Level Task Force under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima Gregory Thejawelie has  appealed to all the Government offices, institutions, schools and Churches under the district to restrict single use plastic products including all plastic carry bags irrespective of size and thickness, plastic cutlery including plates, plastic cups, straws, stirrers, etc, cutlery and other decorative products made of Styrofoam, polythene, nylon, poly-vinyl-chloride, poly-propylene and poly-styrene.
The task force appealed to all Government offices and institutions to stop the use of packaged drinking water below 20 litre capacities and also instal alternatives like filtered water dispenser/RO plants. All Government employees are further advised to carry reusable drinking water bottles.
The District Task Force on restricting use of plastics held its committee meeting at the office chamber of the Deputy Commissioner on August 28.
The meeting was held to work out the strategy and action plan for the implementation of the Government’s directive on banning plastic with effect from October 1, 2019 within the district and the State as a whole.
Deputy Commissioner Kohima and Chairman DTF, Gregory Thejawelie briefing the members reiterated on the Government’s directive and guidelines on banning plastic and impressed upon the members on how best the district can implement the movement successfully.
The DC of Kohima said that this movement was not only in Nagaland but all over India and as Kohima being the image of the State, the target is to implement the movement successfully in the district, which requires a joint effort of all the stakeholders. He said that the committee, besides the district administration and Kohima Municipal Council (KMC), has roped in the Kohima Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Angami Mechü Krotho (AMK), Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) and Kohima Village Youth Organisation (KVYO) in order to work effectively and to strictly enforce the decison within the district. In this regard, the officer also requested his administrative officers to constitute a committee in their respective sub divisional level to address the issue.
In the meeting, it was decided to have sensitization programmes on the issue at different levels, platforms within the one month time left before the enforcement where the Deputy Commissioner requested all his administrative officers at the sub-divisional level, the stakeholders to take it seriously and create awareness and propagate the message to every individual in their respective areas.
