IMPHAL, Sep 10 : Meghalaya lads have confirmed their place in the final round of the Sub-Junior Boys National Football Championship 2019-20 as they posted a 1-0 win against Mizoram in their penultimate qualifying round fixture at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium today.
Having sealed an easy 3-0 win in their Group opening match against Assam, Meghalaya rode on substitute Jony Bakordor Nongkhlaw goal to confirm their place in the final round.
It was indeed an important match-up as Meghalaya looked to assure their final round berth while Mizoram were expecting a positive start to the qualifying round. Meghalaya however came out to be the luckier side as Jony Bakordor who replaced Wanboklang Wahlang in the 27th minute proved his worth by scoring the winner in the 72nd minute of the match.
Mizoram will now meet Assam in a dead rubber Group B league match on September 12.
Manipur which opened up the qualifying round campaign with a 3-1 win against Tripura will take on Arunachal Pradesh tomorrow in a crucial Group A league match. It will be a must win game for the State lads as Arunachal Pradesh team had notched up an 8-2 win against Tripura yesterday making them remain a stronger contender for final round with better goal count in the group.
