ICAR-Summer school 2019 wraps up

IMPHAL, Sep 16 : The 21 days long ICAR-Summer school 2019, organised by Directorate of Instruction Central Agricultural University, Lamphelpat on 'Agricultural Education, Entrepreneurship & Skill Development in India' concluded at the conference hall of College of Agriculture, CAU Iroisemba today.
Certificates were distributed to the participants during the function.
Vice Chancellor CAU Imphal Professor M Premjit, while speaking at the function, stated that altogether 25 people participated in the training programme, which was sponsored by Indian Council of Agriculture Research. Out of the total participants, almost 14 individuals are from outside the State.
The Professor reiterated that stakeholders should deliberate on the possible impact on revenue and production of the State if farmers continue to leave the profession of farming which is alarming as at least 2058 farmers are leaving their profession daily.
He underscored the need to revisit the curriculum and syllabus of agricultural education of the country in accordance with the changing time.
Professor Premjit said that in the undergraduate course, the subject is focused on traditional agriculture in the 1st year and in the 2nd year emphasis is put more towards the technologies and the 3rd year is more about hunting talents of the students.
The final year, he said, is more about trade, businessmen experiences and learning.
He said that the 21-day long training programme was organised with an objective is to bridge the existing gap between demand and supply of skill workforce, who could expertise in the field of "Doubling farmers income through skill development".
Director Extension Education CAU Imphal, Professor Ratankumar Saha, Dean College of Agriculture Iroisemba Professor Indira Sarangthem, Dean College of Food Technology Imphal Professor Y Jekendra and Director of Instruction, CAU Imphal Dr S Basanta attended the function as dignitaries.
Notably, a total of 50 lectures were delivered during the programme by eminent personalities as resource persons as well as by successful entrepreneurs. Some of topics covered during the lecture were- Role of agricultural education in entrepreneurship and skill development, organic farming, livestock farming, mushroom cultivation etc for entrepreneur development, entrepreneur and skill development for educated farm women, post harvest and value addition for entrepreneurship development etc.
