AAI nods to transgenders in North East airports

GUWAHATI, Jan 13
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has planned to appoint transgenders and Down Syndrome-affected people in airports across the North East.
The AAI has taken this decision to minimise discrimination in the workplace through “Project Equality”, Hindustan Times reported.
“Our Project Equality aims to bring the transgenders at airport jobs. In the North East region, we have one transgender employee at Imphal airport,” AAI North East regional Executive Director Sanjeev Jindal told reporters in Agartala.
He said the AAI has targeted to bring more transgenders into the mainstream at airports.
Regarding employment of people suffering from Down Syndrome, Jindal said that people with Down Syndrome are very good in repetitive jobs like retrieving of trolleys.
He said the AAI set a target to recruit at least one transgender executive at Agartala airport.
“We will give a scope to at least one transgender to work at Agartala airport by February end this year,” Hindustan Times quoted Jindal as saying.
The AAI, two months back, appointed its first transgender advocate Swati Bidhan Barua.
Apart from her, Imphal airport has a transgender employee Milan, the first in the North East region so far.
There are 12 airports in the Northeast region.
