AIZAWL, Jan 19: At least 235 people, comprising of 52 males and 183 females, have been compensated for various crimes since 2012 under “Mizoram victims of crime compensation  scheme, 2011," reports NNN.
According to records of Mizoram State Legal Service Authority (MSLSA), compensation amounting to over Rs 5.98 crore was disbursed to crime victims or their kins or dependents under the crime compensation scheme from 2012 to 2019.
The record said that at least 149 people, comprising 6 boys and 143 girls were given compensation for being victims of crimes committed under “The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.”
33 people, including 6 females were compensated for being victims of crime under section 302 of IPC and 28 rape victims were also given compensation amounting to Rs 36.40 lakh during the same period.
The number of crime victims was the highest in 2018 as the Government disbursed crime compensation of Rs 3.32 crore to 103 victims for that year.
In 2017, compensation amounting to Rs 1.53 crore was given to 54 victims and Rs 33.84 lakh to 43 victims in 2016.
Only one victim was being compensated in 2012 when the scheme was first implemented, 2 victims in 2013, 9 in 2014 and 12 victims in 2015.
The Mizoram victims of crime compensation scheme was introduced in 2011 and was implemented since 2012.
The scheme has been amended at least 4 times.
Under this scheme, compensation ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakh (minimum) is given to victims for several crimes, including acid attack, rape and sexual abuse.
