Interesting pact between KNO and NNPGs The posers that follow

    20-Jan-2020
An unlikely pact, much less an Accord. But this is just what the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) and the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) have done. One is a group thought to be primarily active in Nagaland and the other in Manipur, though their activities and influence may spread beyond the States just mentioned. Apart from agreeing to acknowledge the history and identity of each other, it is significant to note that both entities are engaged in a political dialogue with the Government of India. It is also important to note that both sides represent two communities, one the Kukis and the other the Nagas, though there are bound to be some who will take the trouble of pointing out that the NNPGs are deemed to represent only the Nagas of Nagaland and not those who identify themselves as Nagas in Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. On the other hand, the KNO too is deemed to be primarily active in Manipur though its influence in parts of Mizoram cannot be ruled out. It is therefore the coming together of the two outfits which has elicited so much interest in Manipur. The points of agreement between the two entities is also interesting given that the two have agreed ‘To work closely in resolving all differences through democratic political process and the history and identity of one is respected and acknowledged by the other now and in the future.’ The other points of agreement or the Accord include ‘principles of harmonious and peaceful co-existence, NNPGs and KNO shall from time to time, appraise each other on issues potentially having socio-political ramifications for one community or the other during the course of negotiation for political settlement and peace talks with the Union of India.’
An interesting question here is, how far the agreement would impact on the lives of the Kukis and Nagas who live in Manipur. This question is important for the influence of the NNPGs on the Nagas of Manipur is not yet known and the outfit has also made it clear that their talk is centred on a final agreement which will be about the Nagas of Nagaland. So with the KNO known to have its primary influence here in Manipur, it remains to be seen how far the pact impacts on the lives of the ordinary Nagas and Kukis in Manipur. It also remains to be seen how the NSCN (IM), whose influence among the Nagas of Manipur is understood to be deep and far reaching would have reacted to the new development. Moreover what exactly is the stand of the NSCN (IM) to the demands so far put by the outfits which are in the SoO pact with the Government of India and Government of Manipur. How about the SoO groups to the ongoing peace talk between the NSCN (IM) and the Government of India ? Other than the NSCN (IM), the new development must have also elicited immense interests amongst CSOs which all have been batting for a united Manipur. How well have the demands put up by KNO and the SoO groups gone down with these CSOs. These are all questions at the moment, but important and the posers should definitely give an idea of the opposing interests being pursued in Manipur.
