Senapati, Jan 22: In a suspected river poisoning by unidentified fishermen along Barak River above Khabung Karong, different river inhabits were found dead along the river.
The villagers of Khabung Karong said that different varieties of fishes and crabs were found dead this morning.
They suspected that the fishermen might have used deadly chemicals in fishing.
It may be mentioned that Fisheries Department led by the concerned Minister, N Kayisii had earlier released some 1 lakh fingerlings last year along the stretch of Barak River. Since then all villages and associations have banned fishing. Moreover, Karong Area Union had also restricted usage of a bomb, chemical, etc in the past.
PM Heni, Village Chairman of Khabung Karong stated that anyone involved in the act would be booked under the law to save the forest, river and preserve the environment.
In this regard, the villagers had alerted denizens of Senapati not to fetch water from the river. The Karong Union also advised all not to organise any kind of party or picnic programme along the river for time being.
