New Delhi, Jan 8
Three days after a masked mob attacked students and teachers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University inside the campus, the Delhi Police has identified some of the attackers in the case, sources said.
The January 5 attack had triggered mass protests across the country against the police inaction to control the situation. At least 36 people, including students, teachers and campus staff, were injured in the attack. Among those injured were 22 students, including JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Aishe Ghosh, two teachers and two guards, who have been admitted to AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital.
Ghosh had pinned the blame on RSS-backed student group ABVP. However, ABVP had denied the allegations, blaming the Left-backed student groups for the violence.
On Tuesday, the Delhi Police filed an FIR against Ghosh and 19 others accusing them of vandalism at the JNU server room on Saturday. The FIR was filed on the basis of a complaint by the JNU administration earlier.
JNU V-C M Jagadesh Kumar also faced widespread criticism and there were calls for his immediate sacking for suggesting the January 5 violence in the campus was linked to hostel fee hike protests backed by Left-led JNU Students’ Union.
On Tuesday, he had urged to put the past behind and make sure that normalcy returns to the University. “Our heart goes out to all the injured students. The incident (violence) is unfortunate. I would like to tell students that the JNU campus is a secure place. I urge all students to come back to the campus. Let us put the past behind,” the Vice-Chancellor had said. The Sunday incident sparked country wide protests, with many educational institutions and influential celebrities condemning the violence against students. Actor Deepika Padukone visited the JNU campus on Tuesday and stood in solidarity behind JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh. Indian Express
